Jury Service - loss of earnings

I've been called up for jury service. A bit of a hassle, but I realise Jury service is for the greater good.
I know getting time off work won't be a problem, but apparently the employer doesn't have to pay me during that time, and there's a gap between the max payouts from the courts service and my pay, over ten days enough for a decent holiday.
I've emailed HR to find out the policy, and to see what the deal with pay is, but if my employer doesn't pay during this time, I'm majorly out of pocket. Even if it does, my productivity metrics at work are screwed, and at a time when my employer is looking for any excuse to trim UK(/Europe) engineering it couldn't be worse timing.
How do other people get round this? Just take the bitter pill? defer it?

My work were good and paid me the difference between what I got from Jury Duty and what I would normally get.
You can only defer Jury duty once so looks like you will have to go. As for the wages, you're just going to have to swallow the bitter pill and hope that you get an intersting case. Mine wasn't too bad and although we managed to find the guilty they they all got off with community service. We thought that one of them at least should have got custodial as he had previous.

Just noted though, that your employer can't take any negative action against you for doing Jury service, so if my timebooking metrics go to rat poo because of it hopefully I have protection!

Took them a while to put a jury together as lots of people objected to doing a long stint (lasted a coupe of months I think). In the end it looked like most were either unemployed, retired or in low paid jobs.

Good spot, I noted the correct rate earlier, but not when writing the post. Still crap money though.Still peanuts though. When I was doing mine, there was a big case on which was going to go on a long time. Took them a while to put a jury together as lots of people objected to doing a long stint (lasted a coupe of months I think). In the end it looked like most were either unemployed, retired or in low paid jobs.
