tap-tap-tapping on the manifold
Discussion
hi,
just a quick one. the aa man has noticeda tap-tap-tapping on the manifold. he recommends i get it done. says cars ok to drive.
he says it's caused by exhaust blow-back. however my question is - is it really ok to drive with blow-back? or should i garage it until i can book it into the garage?
Regards,
N

I'll get my coat
I've had tapping coming from mine for over a year now. It's on the list of jobs to do, but pretty low down really!
Pretty common complaint with our cars apparently. Sometimes it can just be a exhaust manifold gasket blown, which providing the manifold comes off OK is a pretty cheap job, Or, it can be a crack in the actual manifold (which mine has). Which is a bit more expensive.
I presume a cracked manifold can be welded instead of being replaced - anyone?
Mine's got a hole in the middle of where the 4 pipes join to the large pipe, probably a nightmare to get to?

Mine wasn't just the gasket, it was a small hole in the manifold as well. David also mentioned it is quite common and it be welded up - that's exactly what he did for me, since the manifolds were otherwise in good order. The welding is a few extra hours labour, so not horrendously expensive.
Hope that helps,
Steve.
