Has anyone had this problem?

Had a grinding sound coming from rear wheel,got some new pads although plenty of life left in them.
Same sound so not pad problem,anyway found that outside pistons not pushing out like inside ones.
Bled caliper,seems a bit better now,but there seems to be a design problem to do with upright and disc.

When brake caliper is on,it does not seem to be centred to the dics, inside gap between pad and dics about 5mm,
gap between outside pad and disc nearly touching.

Is this a design fault?

Only way round it is to either get a spacer between two halfs of caliper to bring outside one further out.

Machine hub so disc sits further in maybe 4 or 5mm

Other side seems to be much the same

Any help much appreciated

Just to add,grinding sound is coming from disc touching dome screw on the outside of caliper.

Odd, sounds like something isnt fitted properly, the discs are wrong or the pistons on the calipers are sticking? i'd take the wheel, caliper, disc off and have a good look at everything and clean up with brake cleaner to see what is touching first.

what discs and pads are fitted?

Check the hub nut it tight. The lock nut has a tendency to come loose. Any excessive pedal travel?

All standard discs and pads
dics caliper been checked and cleaned,piston problem i think has just highlighted the fact
that caliper is not centred on disc,defo a design problem.
Car is a early 2.5 so maybee the design of the upright was altered for later models.
Hub nut all done to torque levels

Really dont know best way to sort, spacer in centre of caliper or machine some off hub,

mesurements all compare to other side

Just another thought,had mole vally press out old wheel bearing 2 years ago and press in new one.
If bearing was not pushed in far enough would this affect how far hub sits out?

Seems odd that it has just manifested as if it were a design issue like you believe then it would be fair to say that it should have been evident from build. Have any items recently been replaced or disturbed in that area and reassembled incorrectly.

You could verify that by counting the threads from the lock nut to the end of the stub axle. Compare with other side and se if they are the same,

If its dead centre of the caliper then its simply uneven pad wear. If the disc is not dead centre of the two caliper halfs it must be the hub/bearing is not correct or not pressed into the upright correctly.

Yes if it was both rear bearings replaced it sounds like thats where something has gone wrong

Will have a better look at that Marc,thanks for advice.
Think problem has just come to light because pistons only pushing on inside of disc forcing
disc to be pushed onto dome screw on other side of caliper
But this is made worse by the fact that caliper is not centred exactly on disc.
gonna take everthing off again tomro and double double check inc thread lenghts

Could it be a problem with the handbrake mechanism? I found the shoe retaining thingy slopping loose inside the drum when I took my discs off for cleaning. The retaining screw had dropped out and got trapped between drum and hub-carrier and written itself off, this would have made a grinding sound until enough got worn away (before my time obviously).

Hi Steve I've had this problem it's down the the hole bearing assembly moving in the hub , mine was caused by the inner circlip breaking up and allowing the bearing assembly to move . Be very carefull as the inside of the brake disc can rub on the face of the alloy hub !!!!!

simon didnt you replace all the hubs and bearings. how much were they.

Tux, the big circlip that you see when you take the hub off, is that the one
you mean,or is there one behind bearings as well

There should be a circlip on the inside and on the outside to prevent the bearing assembly moving in 2 directions , my inside one broke up at d
Snetterton last year and allowed the bearing assembly to move , it destroyed the alloy upright , I had to replace the whole assembly including the bearings and hub , I also replaced all the circlips to ones that are bigger to prevent it happening sgain , I would suggest when you do a bearing change the circlips are renewed at the same time . the boys a Jetstream sorted all the replacement parts ect .
