I've noticed more and more of these big winners lately going public.

Going public is obviously in Camelots best interests, so I guess they must be talking the winners into doing it, but how?

Why would they not want to? Living a lie and trying to keep it a secret? Plus if you don't come out the media will hound you down and someone will realise. Plus look at the good the last winners have been able to do by going Public? They have helped loads of people and charities.

I Havn't heard of a lottery winner being kidnapped or house being robbed etc. I think you should have more faith in people to do the right thing.

I used to think I wouldn't go public but I wouldn't want to lie forever and withhold it.

"If you take the publicity option we'll be able to offer you more financial advice and help".

or

"Haven't you always wanted to be famous?"

But realistically it's a combination of the above mixed in with a healthy dose of stupidity... only a total fool would want to go public with a massive win.

Good luck to 'em though.

I can't really imagine the media ruthlessly searching for the identity of secret lottery winners anymore. There have been so many winners that its not special anymore. Even the Wiers didn't exactly get a huge amount of media attention.

Very true, but I was implying that Camelot would (probably) try to scare winners into doing things their way.

It's in Camelot's interest to try and make people tick the publicity box after all. I wonder if there are any stats to show if ticket sales rise after a really big jackpot win where the winners have gone public opposed to big win with no publicity? After all, they are in the business of selling fantasies...

So why would you all not go public? Do you think you would have hundreds of people at the castle gates asking for food hand outs? Or that all your friends would think they are owed something?

I admit some people would ack crazy but how could you keep it secret realistically? Pretend you have a successful business, big card win? Dead relative? I just think it would be easier to come clean rather than try and and hide the Zonda?

Turn the question around. Why would you go public? What possible advantage is there to everyone knowing how rich you've suddenly become?

I wouldn't tell anyone at all to start with, and certainly wouldn't go public at any time if I won that much money.

I would go public just and then on live TV just come out with "And any beggars can fk off right now I aren't giving you a penny." Had it been me I would have also publicly declared my intention to buy and relaunch TVR. That would have both helped with publicity and got Smolensky's attention at the same time. And obviously I would try to keep my plans for TVR in the news for as long as possible.

Has anyone who didn't go public ever been outed by the press?

I have listed my reasons above, I can't really see a downside. The crappy red top papers ask you what you are going to spend the money on then leave you alone. Unless you are Micky Carroll!

Thinking......if I won £148m or similar, I think I'd try and sit on it for a few weeks, then announce to all & sundry that I'd won, say, £2m on the Wednesday game. That way, you can start spending, and giving sensible amounts away, and I'd bet that the majority of people would just think "hmm, they've spent a lot on cars/houses etc" without realising that you've actually got a little more than you said you had. I guess if you haven't got £2m in the bank, you don't really know what sort of lifestyle it will support.

Figures may be a bit skew but I think the principle might work?

Nah, investment of £50 million which would include infrastructure and development of a Tuscan based car. Get the brand for about £5 million (would be willing to go up to £10 million).

I think this.
