£40k budget for a daily driver, 6k miles per annum, mainly 2 seater

Priorities - good engine , great handling, prefer DCT/PDK, modest level of toys, reasonably comfortable seats (maybe rules out Cayman R).

Can just about get a fairly new E92 Competition package, 1M or Cayman R or a 911 circa 2008.

What do you guys/gals think?

I think if residuals are a concern (not sure if they are or not?) then it would be the 1M or Cayman R, i think a Cayman R with PASM and the right seats would still be reasonably comfortable? the 2008 911 would still be a Gen1? if so i'd baulk at putting so much money into something with a notroiously flakey engine. I like the M3 but think that on a 40k car you could be looking at 20k depreciation in over 2-3 years come trade in time

I think i'd be leaning towards the Cayman R or 1M (then get it off to DMS to have the CATS sorted and get their remap so it's putting out over 400bhp) but in the ideal world you'd probably want to drive them all and see which one, if any you fall in love with

It'd be the Cayman R for me out of those. Much more driver-focussed setup than any of the others. I don't remember the seats in the Cayman being bad?

cayman R according to reports should be the most fun to drive, the 1M should give you a lot of fun with decent practicality

With that choice/level of money I'd definitely be going for test drives. The 1M is a proper manual box only IIRC so that probably rules it out on your preferences

Thanks all.

Cayman R's are slightly north of £40k , but fewer around so will probably retain values better than the 2 BMW's.

Plenty of E92 M3's around so do take on board that it may well halve in a further 3 years. But they do have plenty of toys.

Agree about the Gen 1 997 - thanks for that input.

Further input most welcome.

Cayman R or 1M. I'd have to drive both to decide though.

Definitely rules out "moderate level of toys"

Personally, I think I'd go for an older naturally aspirated 911, and used the money saved over a Cayman R to buy an exhaust upgrade and have a pile of "what if" money. I'd imagine you can probably get a nicely specced 996 Carrera with decent miles for some pretty good prices right now.

You think? They've got cruise, reverse camera, Bluetooth, sat nav, heated seats, garage door opener

Can you actually get an Evora S for 40k? I thought they were holding their value better than that?

if it was my money I would definitely have to drive the 1M and Cayman R, probably even more than once before choosing between them.

Two cars I love very much. Cayman probably appeals to a smaller audience but would be the sweeter drive. 1M is one of those hard to argue with decisions that will almost certainly go down in history as a great.

The new M5 (F10) is already down to low 50's, that' s big hit. Awesome car.

I suppose when the new M3 (F30) makes an appearance with its triple turbo power, the 1M may not look as attractive at current prices.

And really is it preferable to the E92?

Are you sure?

As for your car list I don't think you'll go wrong with any of them, I've had a e92 M3 and currently run a gen2 911 the 1M and Cayman R are great cars too.

I suppose if someone put £55k on the table, they could walk away with the keys.

The seats are ok in the R, i'm not small and getting in and out can be a laugh but it is a real sports car, i have recently done 4000 miles around Norway with the wife and no complaints. The only mod i did was buy a sparco cushion for behind my shoulders to push me forward slightly due to a bit of arm ache when i 1st got the car.
Also there are 2 different seats, buckets/leather.

To wet your appetite:
