I used to mountain bike....alot, but since the assualt 4 years ago I've gone from a quite slim 12st (I'm 5'9" tall) to 14st at it's highest.

Anyway, the time came to do something about it, so I'm taking in less calories (whilst still have 3 meals a day), I've reduced my drinking & I'm excersising more.

The first few dropped off in a fortnight, now I'm losing a steady 2-3oz a day & I'm noticing I'm starting to look more toned (but not powerfully built), is this what would be classified as a healty weight loss rate?

I might get shot to bits for saying it, but I'm sure the 'dont lose too much too fast' rule is to prevent people crash dieting and losing a ton of muscle mass before dropping the fat.

If you're happy (i.e. the diet isnt turning you into a stressed out monster (as ketosis can sometimes cause, you're still eating well (veg and whatnot) and you're not losing muscle mass, it's not really all that important.

1-2lbs a week is typically considered achievable and sustainable, so yes, 2-3oz per day is about right. Weight can fluctuate up to 2lbs a day though so rather difficult to tell over such a short timespan.

I am losing a steadyish 2lbs a week.

I have been told not to aim for much more than this as at the end you will easily put it back on and also it gives chance for your skin to react too.

That's probably a good reason, actually! Most people crash diet, then put it all back plus another few lbs for luck then complain some diet didn't work, get depressed and eat a load of chocolate doing an Alan Partridge car/chocolate scene.

All good then, I'm excersising regularly, at the gym 3 times a week doing cardio & gentle weights, cycling about 100miles a week.

This is a timely thread as Ive recently joined a gym and wondered if my 2.25lb loss in the first week was too much/too little.

Again, about 2lbs a week.

Gym 3 times a week - less beer - better diet.

Starting to feel better - if not "seeing" the results yet - but it's only been 5 weeks.

Weight may not have dropped, but bet you've lost an inch or more around the middle.

For me Ive been gym 4 times a week but its only been my first week so the novelty might wear off soon - better diet also.

Started at 11 stone 13lb and im now 11 stone 10.75lb.

Indeed, look at whether your clothes are looser or not. Your weight only tells you how much your total body content inside the skin is and not the breakdown.

Thanks all.

Trousers may be a bit looser I suppose, but no "real" gains. I still have a cupboard full of stuff that I cannot get into.

Then again, I did start at 17.5 stone - most of it beer and the knock on from giving up the fags, so I know that it will take time to lose the paunch. I'm no spring chicken after all.

The important thing at the moment is that it really is making me feel better - I may be about to get bitten by this "gym bug" that everyone tells me about.

The results I am after, no doubt, will come.

Good man! Stick with it. It took years to put on, it'll take years to take off.

And wait until you've got just a lb to lose. It gets exponentially harder. I think I've lost 1lb in 3 months. This is when faith in what you're doing really comes into play.

I've been loosing 2lb's a week now for 9 weeks by cutting out all snacks and alcohol, counting calories and by exercising at least 3 times a week, feel much healthier for it and I can fit into t-shirts I haven't been able to before and now don't have any jeans that fit!

It's beginning to get a bit more difficult now so I think I need to up the exercise a bit,i'll stick with it though as i'm after long term health benefits.
