I purchased a 2000 Tuscan 4.0L 3 month ago it has been running very well but started to get noisy over the last few weeks, when I came home today and opened the bonnet there is a heavy tapping noise from the top front of the engine.
What could this be there is 30,000 miles on the car the oil pressure is 60psi cold and 40/42 hot. I have a T350 also and know how the engine should sound.

If its definitely coming from the engine and it isnt a chain or pulley, and its has deteriorated over time, it is indicative of a loose finger follower and you have just a shim pop out. Advice would be not to run the car at all until a specialist has had a good look.

If it is that, with some luck it's still sat in the head of the engine.

As above really. Best to be cautious.

Thanks guys for your help, I will get the car transported to the garage.
I got the T350 last year and liked it so much but think the Tuscan is a nicer looking car, I plan to change the T350 for a Cerbera as I have a 3& 5 year old son and they love cars.

Even a Cerb might be a bit too much of a handful for a 3 and 5 year old.

Good Luck !
Hope it's just something loose or a popped shim, and not the dreaded SP6 gremlin....

Career Tip - If you like cars, become an Estate Agent in London !!!

popped shims can sometimes mean engine out, depends where they travel...

Let's hope if it's that, it's still in the head area.

Strange that no one commercially produces a guard or screen to cover the oil return in the head so the shi remains in the head.

I know PetrolheadPete created some of his own in his head rebuild.

Got a report back today the cam is scored from the finger follower on number 2 inlet looks like a rebuild required.

I think I will upgrade to 4.3 or 4.5.

Thanks for your help

I'm sure you know all the options, Power 3.6, 4.0, 4.3, 4.5 rebuilds, Str8Six 4.0, 4.3, RG FFF 4.0, RND engineering have several rebuild options too, and there must be others I'm sure.

Shame about the bad news, but every cloud eh ??? cloud9

I agree go for the 4.3 with new chain set and new half time bearing ... Plus more bhp ... I'm going to join you smile

This is probably what you meant anyway but just in case, the 4.3 rebuild includes the half time bearing and chainset rather than them being an additional cost.
OP - Dom at Power turned my engine round in 2 weeks so not a huge amount of time to be without. I went 4.3 and the torque is massive at the moment (still running in) and even coming from a 4.0 you'll notice the difference straight away.
