The current TV adverts for Quorn are clearly targeted at the non-vegetarians in a bid to scare us aware from meat but I'd rather a lower fat meat sausage over their fungus sticks

Quorn Sausages has 6.8g fat per 100

Sainsbury's be good to yourself 2.6g fat per 100

I suspect they have to add more fat to a quorn sausage to make it actually taste of something?

Planning to cook a huge chili, I thought I'd get some Quorn mince so I could make some of the batch veggie and feed it to a friend.
I was horrified to see that it was 50% more expensive than meat.
I took the easier, and more morally correct option of converting the friend back to eating meat.

We did a test at College where we made 3 dishes of Spag Bol. One was beef mince, one all Quorn and the last was half and half.

In the test, about 75% preferred the taste of the half and half sauce. I've never used soya protein since but would be interested to know if the taste has improved in the last 30 years.

Quorn is largely mycoprotein; a fungus. Soya protein is from soya beans. Not used quorn mince much, but the chicken-like stuff is OK. Don't eat much of any "meat-substitutes" really, other than soya mince in chilli.

The Quorn sausages are horrible, but then I'd be asking how does a normal pork sausage manage to be so low in fat?

Looks like we both quoted incorrect fat levels for Quorn sausages...

9.5g fat per 100!

http://www.quorn.co.uk/products/80/chefs-selection...

And for contrast, weight watchers pork sausage has 4.2g / 100

I can't wait for the day when we are all told that fat is good for us and that we should eat more of it. It'll come. yes

Don't know what Quorn sausages cook like, but surely most of the fat in meat sausages renders out of the sausage and into the pan?

Which would be why most decent sausages have added fat, so they remain moist after this has happened?

Mrs _Y£K is a veggie and are firdge is full of quorn products. The chicken nugget thnigs are not too bad, but the rest is horrid. The 'lunch meats' for sandwich fillings are simply cardboard and as pointed at the sausages are the worst.
They now stock several different 'flavours; of sausage too, cumberland, bbq and normal and I can confirm all taste equally pants.

I shall of course be continuing to slip bacon into all of her sandwiches ...;)

Why do some veggies insist on this fake meat? If you don't want to eat meat, why eat pretend meat? I can't stand sprouts but I don't make own out of pork mince so I can pretend I still eat them. Madness!

Why does it bother you? Personally I don't eat a great deal of pretend meat, because I never much liked meat in the first place. However, many people are vegetarians for ethical and/or health reasons; they may want to still eat meat-like products.

Haven't tried Quorn, but many years ago I quite liked the Linda McCartney frozen lasagne, and also something called Beanfeast, which was dried soya mince with flavourings (chilli etc). They were convenient and tasted ok. Not a patch on the real thing though.

Just done a quick sausage price comparison on Tesco website :

Quorn £5.84/kg
Richmond £2.94/kg
Butcher's Choice £2.94/kg
Tesco Finest £5.30/kg
Tesco Everyday Value £1.24/kg
Walls £4.41/kg
Porky White's £5.18/kg (these are my personal preference)

Apart from the above there are also a few very high-end fancy sausages and free-range etc, which are £6 - £7 a kg.

Quorn seems to be priced well into the premium sausage range. So for me, they would have to taste fantastic to compete - and all the anecdotal evidence seems to be that they don't.

I asked a veggie this once, she said she liked meat, just not where it came from.

My OH isn't veggie but loves the bite size quorn scotch eggs.

My wife told me that she used to eat soya mince when she was a student, and it was fine. So we bought some and tried her old spagbol recipe out. She agreed that it was revolting. Moral - students will eat anything!

Awesome!

I don't have anything against Quorn from a moral standpoint - if those veggies want to eat pretend meat because they can't handle the real deal, then more power to them. I personally don't eat it because it tastes fking rank.

I didn't say it bothered me, I said I didn't understand why people who choose not to eat meat, then choose to eat pretend meat.
