Swapping private plates at time of purchase

Sorry if this has been done before.

Just agreed to buy a new car. The previous owner wants to keep his private plate and we want to put ours on. Who needs to do what and when?
We have only just purchased the private plate and have included him as a nominee. Does that make it easier?

you will need to both ideally go into a dvla office and go through it with them.

Yes if he is on your plate documents it will help but might not be necessary.

I have just done it, I swapped cars with someone on a Saab forum forum.

He needed a diesel and I fancied an Aero so we just swapped cars as value they matched etc etc.

Went to DVLA and they did the change of ownership and reg changes at the same time.

Only thing was that both logs books are been sent to me as they needed to go to one person who had a plate and car in their name.

Was easy, but got to be done at a dvla office else it will get messy and confusing.
