Having not really listened to them, since Origin of Symmetry which I thought was pretty good, I felt their performance at the closing ceremony was pretty hysterical (in the literal, not funny way). Very over the top and not really in a good way.
Judging by the fans I know, they seem to be a "thinking man's" rock, is for people who work in IT who think Subaru Imprezas are a sensible value performance car and like quoting Star Wars adn Lord of The Rings.
And again for me that isn't a good thing.

The earlier stuff is defonately better though, but 'the resistance' isnt a bad album, just 'showbiz' is a hell of a lot better

I've always erred on the side of caution with Muse tbh, some of their earlier stuff was alright. The stuff they are putting out these days just sounds like a caricature of their former selves IMO.
WTF was up with that Olympics song they did? I know this opinion isn't shared by all but I thought that track was a joke the first few times I heard it. Still can't quite believe that it was the song of the Olympics.

Undeniably they're very talented...guitar riff on MK Ultra & drums on Map Of The Problematique in particular are quite summat. Their 1st album was really ambitious & very good in fact, always chuckled at the idea of them playing tracks like that in a dingy boozer to a pissed up bar fly & the bloke in the corner with the dog on a string.
That said, playing live they (mostly Bellamy) get on my tits. I've seen them twice, both times were years ago before they became more & more preposterous. Second time I saw them I nearly walked. They have a song called Unintended, a lovely, slow song that I really like. Half way thru it (for no good reason whatsoever) Bellamy stamped on the fuzz pedal & let rip like Steve Vai...tosser. That woulda been about 2003/4 so gawd knows what they're like now they're filling stadiums.
On record mind you I think they still cut it, he just needs to reign his fret w

king in a bit. Saw them live in Teignmouth a few years ago 2009? perhaps. Got videos of them live at Wembley and at various festivals. They sound epically fantastic live. Their musicianship is just amazing. However, they don't exactly interact with the crowd, beyond their bassist and drummer having the odd word. Bellamy does all the poses and posturing, but rarely says anything beyond 'thanks'. The sets are just getting dafter and dafter, but they do seem to be able to pull them off.
People keep saying they sound increasingly like queen, but I think that's only because they're including a lot of 70s stuff in their work at the moment. It'll be interesting to see where they go next. My missus hates the early stuff because it terrifies her; sounds too much like a lot of horror film soundtracks.

The last album had 1/2 good songs, the new stuff sounds like Matt was sat writing whilst thinking "YES, I AM AMAZING!".
Plug in baby, the whole of showbiz, black holes, butterflies & hurricanes. Completely changed. It doesn't seem like the usual 'maturing' of bands that splits opinions of fans, but more they are constantly trying to show that they think they are the best.
My opinion so feel free to disagree. I know many people that agree with me and it leaves a bit of a bad taste IMO.
