Job application forms being too intrusive/ ID security risk

I've a job interview in the next couple of days and they want me to fill out a 5 page long application form which is really quite intrusive healthwise and also demands proof ( inc photocopies) of Bank account details, passport ID, driving licence and insurance details etc. I'm to bring all this along to the interview.

I've done a google search on the Company, and although supposedly been established in the 1840s there is very little info about it apart from loads of ads for it and a couple of forum questions last year on moneysupermarket.com re interviews which had very few responses.

It has a few high profile names as it's clients which I'm going to contact their Head Offices and see if they really are clients of them - but How do you trust people that offer you job interviews and demand very personal information as part of their application process?

I think there is some law/regulation that means they have to check you are legal to work in the uk (i.e. a citizen or have a visa etc), hence they ask for identity information. However that doesn't mean they need to know your inside leg measurement and what colour bike you got for your 6th birthday.

Could just be a standard security vetting thing, if some of what they do is a bit sensitive in one way or another?

I only say this because you state there isn't much information about the company itself and that you say they have high profile clients.

If that is the case, the bank statements etc are probably to make sure you're not in a weak financial position that would render you susceptible to blackmail etc. In the context of security vetting it's pretty standard stuff. If it;s literally just account DETAILS they want, then I would assume it's because they're considering paying you at some point

I think wanting to know my daily alcohol intake is a bit personal as well as all the other health related questions ( HIV, erectile dysfunction and menopausal problems to mention other examples). I can understand the smoking question but they've not stopped short of asking anything including if you're hetero/bi or homosexual!

I doubt very much if I will work for them ( part time, minimum wage, mind numbingly boring job aka stock taking). I was really surprised at how intrusive they can be in asking for applicants' details when a job offer isn't even in place...this is just to get an interview!

I've got the interview - but if I don't provide the info I won't progress to a formal job offer.

eta After much consideration I've declined their interview invitation.
