Sorry, it's another 'what car'
I'm after a decent working vehicle capable of towing a large car transport trailer.
It'll be sign written & hopefully not too dated, perhaps a later L200?
I don't want a regular car, it would just not look the part turning up in mondeo to transport a Discovery on a trailer.
Something with good towing capability is a must but also practical with good economy.
Budget I imagine could be around £6k.
Suggestions much appreciated.

There are rafts of confusing laws about weights for towing - there was a thread about it recently.
We've been helping a neighbour get their hay in over the last couple of days. Their friend's L200 became stuck and I pulled it out with our Landcruiser on equally boggy ground and then their Defender 110 got stuck and I pulled that out too. My wife then loaded up about 1.5 tons of hay onto a 12'x5' trailer and then drove towards the gate out, where the other two had been stuck. She's not daft and has done a lot of horse trailer towing in the past so she switched on the centre diff-lock and just simply drove through where the others were stuck, towing the trailer and hay. TBH I think the Defender's problem was poor tyres.
I appreciate that you can get a very capable LR for very little money and they are easy to fix but they need fixing a lot.

I suggest a diesel Land Cruiser Amazon.
Towing ability, reliability, and road presence.
+1Towing ability, reliability, and road presence.
None of your pickups will be tow 3.5 tonne's legally or safely. Amazon all the way is really the only thing that will tow big stuff reliably & safely.
Here are mine & my mates one, thats a 3.4 ton double car trailer in the background.

The Amazon is a great car but expensive. How about a Nissan Terrano II
.If the current 100 series Amazons are too expensive, then how about a previous 80 series diesel Amazon?
Up to 1997 'ish
This shape.

..
There is actually nothing better for towing a trailer with a Discovery perched on on it.

Thanks folks; I much appreciated all the comments.
I have gone for the L200; they are a good workhorse (circa 2003 model).
I'll look for a lighter trailer to pull and a little smaller than originally planned; it'll only be for transporting things like classic cars and for my own vehicles (Elise, MX5 & M5), it should just about be fine for the M5.
