I'm off to the states (SF) in a couple of weeks for five days and need a bag to hold all my stuff. I'll be taking the usual fare, but also my Macbook and other related crap (although the laptop/phone etc will be with me in the cabin on the flight).

So, any recommendations?

Advice: Check your weight allowance - then check it again! Then check to see if they specify sizes of carry-on - AND CHECK IT AGAIN!

I carried my laptop in its carry bag, and was allowed this IN ADDITION to a normal bag (as carry on). BUT NOT EVERY AIRLINE ALLOWS THIS.

So read your airlines website - every piece of the small print - then read it again! And if you're travelling a budget airline, read it all a third time, as the b*****rds will try to screw you at every turn

Been using northface summit hold alls for years, travelled all over the world on planes and joined and left ships with them, so they've really taken a beating and they've lasted better then anything I've used before, not cheap- you do pay for the name I guess but fit loads in and the straps are a massive help too.

I've been using a standard jansport backpack with a laptop pocket for cabin luggage for the past 5/6 years and never had any thing damaged or broken and always travel with my macbook, speakers etc, it does the job nicely and is just the right size for it not to be an issue at check in.

I've just bought a Delsey polycarbonate case with 4 wheels, extremely light with a double zip and sees almost indestructible.

About 150 pounds.

Looked at Rimowa but at 3-4x the price I cannot see the benefit.

Bit of a left field suggestion but worth checking out Tesco.

In recent weeks they've had an offer on Wenger luggage where with clubcard points you can get 70% (or so) off. The stuff was really good quality. Not sure if the offer is still continuing.

I picked up a backpack via the 70% off Tescos offer which I thought would be suitable for most holiday travel (approx £11 with 10 vouchers). Very good quality.
The offer to collect the vouchers ended end of July and possibly the chance to cash them in has gone too.

I'd suggest a backpack as it's light, easy to carry, and reasonable amount of space.
