It seems theres a premium/high grade petrol thread started every week, but what about diesel? I hope we've all learnt by now that the petrol can be very effective but it needs to be the right type of car/engine.
Is it the same story with diesel. I have one diesel in the fleet but it's an older car(Audi 80) so is it worth it?

I asked the local chippy (only one in the town) and somebody already 'takes care' of their old oil.

I don't fancy the red diesel thing.

So can anybody answer my original question? silly

I had a Fabia Vrs when they first came out and BP Ultimate Diesel (the only posh stuff available at the time) certainly made it feel smoother and more urgent.

That engine is simple compared to diesels today but a step up on yours. You might not notice the slight differences in refinement and power given that, I’m guessing, it doesn’t have much in the first place.

Also the Vrs was better on the second full tank it must have taken a while to clean the fuel lines/pump/injectors to take advantage of the higher cetane rating.

I tried Shell V Power in my old 1.9tdi Passat when it was on promotion last month.

Maybe it felt a bit more punchy and maybe I got an extra few miles out of it. Mainly though I was probably just pleased I got something supposedly better on promotion.

Obviously didn't change my world though, as I've never put it in again.

My old '53 plate Focus smoked like a chimney at low revs, suspected the EGR stuck. Chucked a tank full of Shell super diesel through it and it smoked worse, although a different, lighter smoke colour. It suddenly blew out a clot during a thraping a few days later. All was smooth again. Noticeable improvement in response too.

A tank full and a good Italian tune will help - fresh oil, a good 3hr run, plenty of time at higher rpms - you may notice a difference smile

But long term, I tend to do one tank in four.

We've been gauging this in our 57 plate 1.4TDCi Fiesta Van. Running on normal Diesel from a mixture of forecourts it has been averaging 58 MPG. Using BP Ultimate and Shell Vpower we have managed to average 63MPG (same driver and same driving style so figures wont be far out) This has been over the last 4k miles so not just a quick comparison smile

Does the increased cost not just negate that though?

I've just bought my first diesel car (not through choice, they only do one petrol model and it's a lot more money!) so this is a new world to me. The car is still bedding in so economy increases tank by tank. Once I'm up to 5000 miles or so I'll try a tank for comparison.
