B&W film

Is there anywhere that I can get b&w 35mm film developed while I wait? I'v had a few rolls done at jessops and had to wait 2 weeks and it's pricey. I got some colour done at asda while I waited and it was much cheaper but they said they don't do b&w any places to try or should I just learn how to process myself to avoid waiting weeks

I don't know as much as I should about film. It's kentmere 400 if that means anything

If I was seriously into B&W processing (I dabbled as a teenager under my father's watchful eye) I'd buy all the stuff and do it myself. It is quite something to have a chemistry lab in the middle of your house!

I don't know if this will help you in your B&W quest, but if you start using Ilford 400 XP2 Super then you can get it processed at any 'high street' lab rather than having to send it away or do it yourself.

I wanted to get into black and white, and I've been very happy with the results and convenience of the Ilford stuff.

I was using illford at first but not sure if it was xp2 and jessops still wanted to send it away. I'll look into that film though

Doesn't help much but Forest photographic in Walthamstow, London will do a rush service for you if you have a few films to make it worth their while. They're a proper lab wi everything on site including slide processing and true bw process as well as the usual c41 colour and bw.

While you wait may be a push but it you have a number of films I'm sure they will do a same day service. I used to work there. Been established over 40 years and is a true family run business. I highly recommend them for anything photographic related.

For something more local, why not speak to some local colleges? Ether that or stop using Jessops and find a proper independent lab.

ETA illford do or at least did do a c41 bw film. Sounds like your Jessops doesn't have any equipment in site if they are sending c41 out. Try somewhere else. Jessops are ste unless you want to buy a camera.

Hmm. Not sure if this is any help but Peak Imaging are just East of Sheffield (presumably a bit closer to you then the earlier suggestion).

I don't think they offer an as-you-wait service but can offer a same day turn around I think. Worth calling to find out what the potential is if you think they are near enough for you to be interested.

My local Tesco Extra (not near Manchester) still has film processing equipment installed but I have no idea if they will do B&W. Results may depend on the quality and training of the staff employed at the desk.

DS Colour Labs (Didsbury) still offer B&W processing but I have no idea if they can offer any form of as-you-wait service.

I had a test roll processed at Boots, was C41 so they couldnt really mess it up too much. Was done within half an hour and I think cost £5 from memory. Maybe a little more, cant be sure

Ilford will process it themselves - and from memory they were reasonably fast.

So . . . on a related topic, any tips on how best to fit a windowed room for occasional darkroom use? I have one room I can turn over to a darkroom, albeit in the roof void and with 2 windows . . .

If you can travel to Nottingham, I can recommend a brilliant place. It's a small processing lab owned by a bloke who processes and prints most types of film. Did my roll of Velvia in less than 24 hours, and the results are excellent. Would only ever take my film there.
