Well, had an eventful trip home from work this evening.....all 2.5 miles of it

Going down a Leeds side street, down hill in torrential rain, when a clio decided to turn across me, to turn up a street,at 10-12m distance....... bugger!

Look at that water running past the wheel!

Opposing Clio didn't fare so well.
(Police/ambulance happened to be passing 10 mins after event, not called, no injuries)

Well Clio driver accepted responsibility, turns out we have the same insurance company, so they have already agreed to scrap of the Punto at a decent price.....

So now I need to get looking for some new wheels....seriously considering an MX-5 thumbup

Knew I forgot something in the first post;

Budget wise around £7k.
As for age, your very kind but not as young as my poverty spec car history would have you believe, 27.

Looking for a fairly young, low mileage car, something with a bit of poke and a decent set of equipment.

I'm not really a fan....but...JESUS?

Seriously I was stunned as well, also the fact that neither car's airbags set off.
All I can come up with (and I have played the incident over in my head a fair bit) is that my drivers side front went in straight at the centreline of the Clio (i.e. on the renault badge).
It was a fairly low speed impact I was not much over 15mph, due to condition and knowing the suicidal pedestrians in the area, and they were setting off from standing traffic.

From experience, mk2 clio's crumple like kitkat wrapper's.

A low speed non fault bump saw mine need £1526 of repairs for a new wing, bumper, headlight and bonnet.

Do you want a faster car this time or a cheap runabout?

"The Leeds side streets that you slip down" as Morrissey wrote. Nearly happened to me once too. Ultra slow speed prang (narrowly avoided) in torrential weather.

They wrote that off? Jeez. I know its 10 years old, but a write off?

Anyway: Focus? Very decent chassis, cheap bits and servicing, reliable. The down side is the sit-up driving position.

hehe That is the only thing I think Morrissey and I agree on then.....

Its a write off mainly due to age, but what the pictures fail to show is that thedriver front suspension is wrenched outta position, and when we pried the bonnet up the inner bulkheads had some buckling.
Certainly repairable but not really justifiable, this car and I have never been 'close' so not crying over it.

To be honest that clio probably crumpled due to the angle it was hit and the fact new cars are designed to crumple it is a 4* car with a lot of airbags would rather have been in that than the fiat no matter how it looks.

The new Clio is a 5* car Renaults are known for safety so don't let that put you off smile

Looking at those you slightly interested in for me would go for the 130i or the R26 Meganne probably the Meganne R26 extremely capable out of the box get a nice one for your budget and remap safely to 270bhp struggle to get a better all rounder for the money if you want to keep some practicality smile

The MX5 appeals to me but in a cheap rwd thrills only such as the mk1 which can be picked up for sub 2k when you are spending 6/7k like the mk3 demands for me I could not look past a 2.7 Boxter or Z4 which to me seem to offer more bang for buck so to speak.

But in summary if you practicality
130i or R26 Meganne

If you don't care about practicality
Boxter 2.7 or S2000 (forgot about this)

As you like the MX5 I would at least consider a Boxter looking could get a nice 2002 boxter or 2000 boxter s for budget set aside a bit for maintenance and you have a modern performance bargain imo smile
Also take into account the MX5 has a long way to depreciate yet whereas for me I cant see the boxters loosing money at anywhere near the same rate.

Having seen the repair bill prices in last months Car Mechanics magazine, I think a Boxster would be a long way down the list!

S2000 as the OP doesn't like the Z4 then really don't like the Mk3 MX5 it is good value new but when used think the are far better cars for similar money.

If you want a busso, forget the brera, it has a nasty GM based half-vauxhaul lump in the front.
