My Chim 400 has a terrible fuel leak. I'd noticed a strong smell of petrol recently, so had a quick look underneath to see petrol pissing down the exhaust downpipe at the back of the ongine!! redface

Is this a common thing? I'm going to lift her up this weekend and have a look. Any advice is massively appreciated.

I had this problem recently. The rubber pipe leading down to the joint of where it meets copper ,had chaffed against the lip of the bellhousing.Easyish job to replace but awkward at the join as there very limited space .smile

Ok so those who have had the misfortune of having to put their P&J out, what size extinguisher is recommended and where does one put it? Boot, footwell, behind seat ?

Here's what they look like - perished .......these have been changed, and the guy who did it removed the plenum to make the job easier, as described above

Just tow a fire engine. It's no joke, the fuel pump will keep pumping 97 octane under pressure all over the exhaust manifold, and fibreglass BURNS!!!

It's a fairly straightforward job; removing plenum makes access much easier (relatively biggrin). IIRC, you'll probably need to bend the mesh located at the base of the windscreen when removing it.

As others have said, use proper fuel hose clips. A long screwdriver makes life a bit easier as well.

Did mine when i changed the clutch and for a piece of mind ,i used a heat resistant sleeve from the engine bay to the copper fuel line .

All mine have been replaced, flow ,return right back to the tank ,and the pipes around the fuel filter, just left the breather pipe where it is .

While your at it have a look at your power steering pipes ! mine are in a right state , where can i get some replacements witout paying out a firtune .

Thanks for all the help and advice guys. Did it this saturday all is good. Removing the plenum does help hugely, the copper pipe is in a really awkward location.
