Comfortable estate - luxury, spae and economy..... What?
Discussion
Need something for a >1 hour each way commute on lorry-choked A road (so power for overtaking is useful) and motorway, mostly congested. Ideal is luxurious, sporty ish drive, but also need estate for load carrying (mostly mtb) and possible dog carrying.
Not massively expensive to own is also a need - so either cheap (but reliable) or slow depreciation. Diesel probably preferred for mpg and torque, but ok to run petrol if ownership costs less overall.
Choices seem to be:
Mercedes e class? What years to avoid?
BMW 5 series (520d?)
BMW x5?
(but not a fan of BMW image, tbh)
Volvo - bit sluggish?
Subaru/ford not quite luxury?
Jag xf is rising to the top of the pile.
Other idea is a more modern supermini - shmbo likes the Citroen ds3 which would be about £250 pcm new, or there's the golf route - but wonder if the drag of the commute, which can ate nearly 2 hours, would be too much of a pain in the winter months. Ind you, lived with a few Elises as sole cars, so am used to hardship - but may have used up my hardship tolerance early :-)
Like the range rover but hard to park in town; rr sport is still expensive and has relative poor economy; discovery is too unreliable/uneconomic (?)
We have an s max, which is fine but on other duties, and not quite luxurious enough, and a boxster, which is great but hard to carry the mtb.
Guess thinking of outlawing about £10k, but overall costs more critical and could pay more or much less.
All suggestions welcomed.....
