Accepted a challenge off a friend, here is the criteria:

Vw mk1/2
BMW e30

Standard cars no modifications. Would consider mk3 golf but no GTI's

£1500 - £2500

say max distance to travel is 100 miles until I hear differently. (edit) he lives in SW London and will travel as far as south coast, but 100 miles in other direction is possible.

What are the checks he should be doing on the above cars to make sure they are not money pits? Get an independent mechanic to look over or is that going to cost too much when his budget is £1500 - £2500.

HPI, etc will be done anyways.

(edit) No Conv... doesnt care about colour or number of doors... its the condition he cares about.

100miles from where?

I know where there's a nice burgundy e30 320i SE Auto with rare beige leather, low owners, only 80k miles and full service history, coming up for sale in a few weeks time and within budget...

£2500? fking hell.

I got a mk2 Gti for £500 with tax and ticket last year. Is your friend mental?

You know what if they're going for that I'll sell you mine in any colour you like. It's a GTI for but 2.5K I'll rip out the engine and stick another one in.

Sorry... SW London... where is this one? I might be able to persuade him to go further afield for a better example.

He wants a pristine example of a car... VW was second choice and the BMWs he has looked at have been around the £2k mark hence the pricing.

PM me details of the car and I will pass them on... including the kind of price wanted.

I guess a lot depends on which versions you are comparing.

I've swapped between E30s and Mk2s for a while now and comparing the 318I or IS to a 8v GTI , the GTI wins hands down. Comparing a 325i and a GTI 16v it is such a tough call. In terms of speed there is very little difference, in terms of handling both offer very good handling but as you can imagine they feel different in terms of RWD vs FWD. Both cars are very capable of providing a fun driving experience!!!!!

I find the golfs are more practical as the E30 boot isn't as big and you cannot fold the rear seats down. Servicing and maintenance is pretty much the same apart from odd items like BMW HT leads being more expensive but most consumables can be bought from GSF/Euro Car Parts etc for very reasonable prices.

In terms of second hand parts both E30s an MK1/2s have huge numbers of parts on owners club sites, ebay and in specialist breakers so it is rare to not be able to get a part.

I'd have a tough job deciding between the two, at the moment I'm feeling a E30 Estate could be a perfect solution, but then when the sun comes out a E30 Cabriolet is very appealing.... anyhow I'm waffling....... I love both!
