The Datsun 510
Discussion
Just a quick question out of curiosity but does anyone know how many Datsun 510's made it to blighty? Was looking at the classifieds of a number of classic car websites but couldn't find any. Seem a pretty popular car in the states but not over here? Any information would be well appreciated and if anyone has experiance with them feel free to share it!
Cheers

I think the Datsun 1600 was the four door. The Datsun 510 was the 2 door. I believe most of models that came to the UK were either Saloon or Estate versions. Not alot of 2 doors but I heard that some of them did come to the UKrb26 said:

Ah, thought they were all Datsun 1600 (bluebirds), but I'm no Datsun expert I do remember my dad having a 120Y and thinking it was st at the time, but they're strangely retro cool now!j44esd said:

Neither am I. I'm waiting for the resident PH Datsun enthusiast to correct me but that's how It worked I think (infact I'm now starting to think your right!) They do have a certain retro charm to them. Shame there aren't a lot of them in the UK. I suppose the only way you could get one is if you imported one from Japan but you'd have to be a seriously dedicated to the cause to spend the kind of money required to get one over here. What kind of power unit did your dad's 120Y have? I've recently got a penchant for Japanese classics.

From memory it was the Tarmac tearing 1.2, a power house that many struggled to tame... They do have a certain retro charm to them. Shame they're aren't a lot of them in the UK. Believe it or not, this was the man I inherited my petrol head gene from! To be fair, he's had some fascinating metal over the years, just possibly not that!
Still, if it had been a mk2 escort when I was 8, I'd have thought that st too! Funny how times change!
To me there is something about classic cars that are infinitely cooler than cars of today. I'd much rather have a classic than a new car. When designers were free to do as they pleased without the health and safety department getting in the way and no real engine restrictions due to environmental issues. Anyway maybe one day when I get the money and the exchange rate to the Yen gets a little better I could look into getting one of these but for now I can only dream about it. Would love to put an RB26 in a 510/1600
I had a Datsun 1200 (b110) rally car and it was brilliant fun. I just searched the specs below from old websites, and will try to find a pic. It created some serious smiles
Datsun 1200 Rally Car - Classic/ Historic class A. Original A12 block, A14 pistons, modified A15 head, Twin 40mm Dellortos, 5spd box, 4 Wheel Discs, Fully adjustable suspension, Fibreglass panels, Carbon Fibre interior, Polycarb windows. Was 720kg ready to race with 137bhp and a 9200rpm redline which I will never forget!

I worked as an apprentice mechanic at a Datsun dealer around the time of the bluebird. The models I remember are the 120y, I had the coupe, the cherry hideous car. The skyline, the original and nothing like the modern equivalent. They also had a big barge which I can't remember the name of. And of course the 260z and 280z. The 280z I remember as being a bit soft.
The cars were great then very reliable nothing major ever went wrong. Rust was the big enemy for these cars. Very poor bodywork.
I left there when I served my time and joined a British Leyland dealership. Incredible difference. like serving my apprenticeship all over again!
