Must have four seats, 3, 4 or 5 doors, no real preference. Nothing with crazy low MPG which counts out any RX-8 I'm afraid. The usual suspects are Leon Cupra, Megane RS 225 and Civic Type R. Anything else? Unfortunately I've discounted any Impreza's as the insurance would be too much alongside the lowish MPG.

Central Scotland best as I don't want to travel 200 miles to look at a nail. Spec away!

Accord Type R near the top of the list alongside a Megane 225 and a LCR.

Celica, Almera and 200sx are all as old as my car and I've learned over the years that old cars are rarely reliable cars. Nice though.

I've always liked Accord Type R's but they all seem to have galactic mileage. Also chocolate gearboxes is a worry as well. Also I'm sure that after a certain time the Road Tax becomes astronomical? Any more advice on this?

Not sure on the astronomical road tax (thought it was post 2005/6? Someone correct me please.) but the bit in bold is a tad worrying as you seem to think that old cars are generally unreliable. Surely not if you maintain them, like newer cars?

I've been burned by many an older car when bits generally start wearing out and need replaced. So far my GTI-6 has had a new radiator, front and rear suspension mounts, track rod ends, a suspension strut, both rear calipers and tie ends. you might say that's because it's French, but a lot fo other cars I've had were the same. The only car I have had that was almost faultless was also a soulless Nissan Almera 1.4 hand me down from my dad!

9-3 Aeros are in that band; not the last word in handling but they are a fine car; was getting tired of mine but I've done ~1000 miles in the past week and it's made me realised how much I love it. My chipped 05 model gives back 30mpg around town if you're not being stupid and the petrol engines are fairly bulletproof, or at least mine has been.

Looking more closely at Accord Type R's. Anyone had one?
