I've got a retention certificate for a VRM that I want to assign to my car on Monday. The assignment fee has already been paid, and the retention period doesn't expire until October, so no worries there.

However, my address on the retention certificate is out of date and does not match the address on the V5C that I received the other day for the car.

Is that likely to cause a problem? Given the length of the queues at my DVLA Local Office I don't particularly want to spend ages queuing only to be told I can't do it without updating the address first.

Will DVLA be able to pull up a history of address changes on my driving licence and see that I used to live there? Or if I just take an old utility bill with me, would that suffice?

I'd ring the DVLA '0300' enquiry line first, before going down and hanging around for an hour, only be told they can't do anything for you. It would be nice to think you can just amend the logbook with your new address and sign, hand this in with your retention cert and they'd issue you with a replacement tax disc.

Going O.T, my local DVLA office will have closed by Christmas, I spend a fair old bit of time down there and I'm a little upset!

Well bugger me, DVLA in "helpful customer service" shocker.

Rang their enquiry line, which I didn't even know existed and was pleasantly surprised to find was actually open on a Saturday (unlike the local offices) and my call was answered straight away, and my question answered within a matter of seconds.

Apparently I can fill out the change of address details on the retention certificate at the same time as assigning it, and that's all fine.
