2L - Not the bug-eye. The face lifted ones.

I've heard about costly parts & service. How much would it cost to have them serviced?

Not fussed over performance. Screaming boxer would be enough for me.

Depends on your budget, the usual full service history etc.
Service costs no more than any other 2 litre car, parts readily available from autofactors.
Relability our 99 sport has done 160k, clutch at 104k, it starts, stops does not use or loose fluids, hope to see do over 200k.

Curious as to why you wouldn't want a turbo one?

A cheap, tough, practical 4WD saloon with much lower running costs than a turbo Impreza? Not much choice out there that ticks all these boxes.

We had one, a V-reg Sport. Was a great car for filling up with fishing gear and hacking down farm tracks. Different function to a turbo, go-anywhere family car for country people, not a performance car.

In my experience they're almost as bad on fuel as the turbos!!

You should get 30-35mpg maybe more, depending on how you drive it. Not being turbo you aren't trying to force shedloads of fuel in along with shedloads of air so will be economical relatively speaking.

They make c.135-150bhp so won't be that slow even when loaded.

Not a bad choice of car if you just want something with 4x4 security, easy DIY servicing and capability to do reliable galactic mileage without complaint. Nothing wrong with that.

I put a thread on here asking for opinions on a 1.5 hatchback and was told to avoid it like the plague!!
I'm looking for something reliable with 4wd and not bothered about doing 0 to 60 in 6 seconds or whatever.
On a different note I always thought Soob engines were the toughest most reliable engines out there but I keep reading about Big ends going and having to change the oil every 3000 miles + you should only use the expensive petrol, sounds like allot of hassle to me are they really that bad?

We've had a 2003 gx sport for 5 years and done 60k miles with no issues. Look after it myself and it's very straightforward to work on. Get most of my service parts from import car parts. It does around 34 mpg on normal unleaded

You've been reading too much nonsense and hearsay instead of asking owners questions. Better to go direct to the source. You are right though, they are probably the toughest and most reliable 4-pot engine on the planet. With the non-turbo engines there's even less to worry about than a turbo engine.

The 1.5's are not a great choice. Wheezy engines doing a lot of hard work and having to be worked hard to get anything out of them. Stick to a 2.0Lt old shape non-turbo GX and you won't go wrong. Get the 5dr sportwagon and they're even more practical. thumbup

Ours ended up dead on the hard shoulder of the M6 with catastrophic engine failure, but then we did treat it like a peasant treats a donkey.
