Hot Start Issue?
Discussion
Hi All
My Chimaera has been runnig sweet all year, but filled up wth petrol on Saturday went to start but nothing, got a push out of the garage and 5mins later started and done 80miles and didn't miss a beat!
I know this is an old topic, but have i got the dreaded hot start problem?
Regards Colin

It could be the starter motor. Lots of extra heat puts more strain on it - expanding metal etc...
My car did this but it was due to a dying battery, it would start fine from cold - drive to the nearest petrol garage (as its always on empty
) and the b
d wouldn't restart. A new battery later and its perfect.

Heat makes everything run worse.
So any of the above things could be the problem.
Checking your battery condition is the cheapest option, so start there.
Mine was cured for now by the Hot Start Mod, which is a relay, Stopped and started my hot car about 20 times today on a track day, started first time every time.
Others swear by a beefier cable from battery to starter, as the TVR one is feeble (same principle as using thick jump leads rather then thin ones)

The hot start issue is caused by the relay in the alarm/immobiliser starting to fail so ally this with the dirty/hot starter motor and the motor won't spin when hot.
If you do the hot start mod and insert another relay in the circuit this relieves the load on a relay that wasn't intended to carry high currents and will probably fix the issue although it depends on the relay in the alarm not
being too damaged.
I had the fix done by X-Works and fingers crossed it's sorted the issue.
PS your battery probably needs changing as well if it takes longer and longer to re-condition.

Why not just fit a thicker Live and earth cable ? thats my next job !
I don`t understand why TVR did not address the problem .
If you just fit a thicker cable you're not replacing the problem of using a relay that shouldn't be being used in the first place.I don`t understand why TVR did not address the problem .
I don't understand why TVR didn't sort it but as we all know there were lots of issues they didn't correct through being too tight, sloppy or not really caring.
Did TVR sort the problem on the later cars? Mine's a '99 and it failed to start yesterday after it had been running hotter than normal for a while. The di
ckhead beeping in the volvo behind didn't help matters and received a gratuitous 'stern word'.
Anyway, seems the problem was relay related as after removing it, giving it a tap and a shake and replacing it, the car fired up. Not sure if it was due to the 'fix' I applied to the relay or because it had cooled down in that time?

The cable from the footwell to the solenoid is Range rover quality, it's the cable up to that point that is weak. So the relay at that point is required.I don`t understand why TVR did not address the problem .

Mine's a 99 too (Chimaera with a flake sticking out of the top) and had to have the hot start mod.....since when it has always started first time. Without the mod it takes 5-15 mins to cool down enough for the car to start, which is long enough for the t

Ha ha, great! Thanks, I may need to investigate - I was thinking about it lastnight actually... It did it in France not too long ago too, but that was after a 20 minute rest so I'm "reasonably confident" it's a dodgy connection in the relay rather than the more usual 'hot start' issue. I have a spare relay (many thanks Jim - I'll get you a new one before the next meet) and will next time swap it immediately so the engine doesn't have much opportunity to cool and see what happens there.
