Selling cars - Where do you advertise?

Just wondering where is deemed the best places for advertising nowadays? Obviously on here but then there is the likes of auotrader and ebay which seem to be a complete rip off. Thinking gumtree might be worth a shot given it is free but after that I'm a bit stumped.

I recently sold my clio 197 through pistonheads, only cost a tenner and I got a fair amount of replies. Couple of timewasters and lowball offers but I was happy in the end!

Only ever use PH to sell my cars...less African Princes appear to be on here than Autotrader or auction sites

I've sold a few through ebay without any trouble. You get the chance to write a proper piece on the car - I've always managed to get pretty much what I wanted also.

Depending on how long you have been a member, PH is free. Thats how I sold the Audi.
Sold the MR2 through E-bay, to a buyer who viewed before bidding, which did save any potential hassle.
A couple with adverts in the car whilst still driving around, and adverts in some corner shops.

I sold my smart roadster on piston heads without any problems, but for cheaper cars I've just used the local Friday ad, and they've normally gone within a couple of days.

A sporty car with a following then I'd say PH and relevant owners forums.

If it's something run of the mill then I'd stick it on Gumtree, if no responses then stump up for Autotrader.

Never had any problem with eBay but have sold several cars through forums - best lateral thinking was a maestro TD on a Land Rover forum, guy came from Holland, took out the engine and took it back to Holland for on e of his Land Rovers, I sold most of the rest of it by responding to wanted adds on maestro forums on a "remove it yourself" basis.

So a lot depends on what you are selling but lateral thinking can work.

PH is good for sporty cars.

Car and Classic is ok (and free) for older cars

Ebay - classified ad is reasonably priced and gets good views but your car has to be cheap to compete.

For all cars Autotrader is still the best - unfortunately they know it and charge accordingly.

I think for cheaper cars gumtree is good. You will get muppets offering you half whatever you put it up for, or just asking what your best price is (by text in near indecipherable English), but with a well written ad I sold my corsa for 250 less than it was advertised for, and only 50 less than I optimistically wanted for it!

When I sold £6k worth of Discovery earlier this year I advertised it on eBay, PH, forums and it took forever. In the end we sold it to someone who saw it on eBay for a lot less than it was worth.

When I came to selling £1500 worth of Freelander a few months back I didn't want to pay anything for advertising. I put it on Gumtree and a few free Facebook groups for selling things locally. It sold within a day through a FB group and had a number of enquiries through Gumtree. A friend has also sold a car through the same FB group (a Saxo VTR)... it seems an odd place to sell cars but it appears to be where the local chavs hang out so cheap cars for sale locally will always attract attention.
