Coffee going bad in a Kilner jar.

I put my coffee in a kilner jar. It goes hard n horrid. How come?

I thought the air tight aspect of the container would be a good place for it. It seems to be fine in the jar it leaves the shop in. Foil pieced, so in use. But the air right Kilner jar, gash.

I don't actually drink coffee myself, so it sits in there for a few months, but it's still fine in the original packaging.

That's my simple question. Done.

When it's foil packed, they replace the air with pure nitrogen.

When you put it in your kilner jar, you also seal in air, which contains moisture, bacteria, oxygen etc.

Keeping it in the fridge will help but I think the issue is you are not using it fast enough.

Maybe a sachet of dessicant would help? I keep mine in a cheapy metal container from Matalan & it keeps ok. Are you keeping it in the bathroom?

I keep it amongst the shampoo in the shower cubicle. So correct there.

It takes a while for it to be used, correct.
But roughly half will be in the Kilner jar and the other half, in the now exposed to air, jar in which it came in.

Original jar - fine.

Air tight Kilner jar - gone to ruin.

I'm thinking of keeping it in the Kilner jar to keep appearances but maybe remove the air tight seal thus making it no different to the original jar.

Oh, the original jar is in a cupboard and the Kilner on the kitchen work top. So there is a sunlight consideration.

It's probably the sunlight - try keeping it in the cupboard or in an opaque jar.
