My wifes great aunt is visiting at the min and asked me in a joke throwaway fashion, If I would like to help her husband finish his project that he was building with his friend. Seems his friend passed away a number of years ago and the project has yet to be worked on since then. Indeed much interest has been lost towards it over the years and the car is in bits all over the garage. The husband has infact now got into RC aircraft as his hobby and no time is spent on the car.
ohhh the car.... a D type jag.
Its only now i am in my own house that it hit me,So no questions were asked at the time,But my wife is now away to bed to get away from me and my need to ask more questions about the car.

  • yes...i know its 99.999999999% likely to be replica, but I am now to excited to find out about it and work out how I am going to get to Cambridge to have a look.

Also 99.99% certain to be one of these:-

If the fin is horizontal, not inclined upwards slightly, that's the giveaway. However, none the worse for that, and when finished damned good fun.

If it's GFRP and a K-Series it's a kit car, if it's aluminium, has an XK and allround discs it's a.. good kit car laugh

yep that is the only problem so far. But i do intend to get things organized so that I can at least go over and look to see what is needed. Then i will have a idea of time needed to be taken off work.

confused

Shouldn't that be: "If the fin is vertical, not inclined slightly"?

No, lowdrag is correct. Those who know D-types quickly recognise a replica as many are produced with a horizontal to near-horizontal upper edge to the fin. This is incorrect in the same way the majority of replicas have the wrong wheel sizes. Original cars had a distinct angle/incline rising rearward, away from the body. Generally it is the more expensive replicas that have a correct fin style...

And the Lynx cars are done from the original buck, so are also corect:-

The fin on a long nose forms part of the spare wheel trap (Ecurie Ecsse photo) whereas on the short nose it was an afterthought and stops where the trap opens. Apart from expensive replicas, I know of no one who is making short nose replicas today.

Lowdrag, Is that a pic of the one that you had carved up to make that XKSS replica?

Well, I'd hardly say "carved up", but yes, the short nose isn't a short nose D-type but an XKSS. However, I stiull have all the parts to put it back if I feel the need:-

Nice to see someone celebrating St.Crispin's day. Poor old guy is not much remembered these days. Nor do many men feel their manhood cursed.
