New shape Cayenne - Questions
Discussion
Looking for a practical SUV mile muncher as a general runabout/dog's body.
The RR is too large in reality and I've narrowed the options down to the new X5 or a Cayenne, the diesel option in both cases.
The advantage the x5 appears to have is that it is a seven seater which is and yet isn't essential. I'll explain, the car will have a pair of baby seats in the rear so there will be a need to fit a third adult in to the car on long journeys. Most modern cars haven't the space to fit anyone in the centre once two modest baby seats are installed.
Sticking this person in the boot is the obvious answer but I could find nothing on the Porsche website that alluded to whether you can stick an adult in the boot, ie a 7 seater option or if the rear seats were wide enough to fit a third adult in between the two baby seats?
Any help would be gratefully received. Plus any comments from anyone who has experienced the x5 and the Cayenne.
Thanks.

It is possible to fit an adult in the middle seat but it's not a long distance/ comfort option. Note the split rear seats do tilt and slide. The boot also contains a large underfloor storage well which swallows up seal squashy sports bags and more, useful if half the boot is full of pram.
There is a large head on here about the diesel cayenne which has a strong fan base amongst owners. We have had ours 12mths now and I think it's a superb piece of kit. Goes like a rat out of a drainpipe in sport mode and very civilised any other time. Rear Chris Harris writing about panamera diesel on home page- many traits the same eg drivetrain which I think is a peerless engine / auto box pairing.
Haven't tried the X5. Friend has one, thinks its excellent. Each to their own. A discovery is a diffent animal, but if majority use is as a family wagon these are extremely capable cars and surprisingly swift in latest diesel/ auto guise. Also has the 7 seats.
New Touareg? I thought the interior /exterior boring, but again excellent engine/ gearbox combo. Useful saving over the Porsche but not sure if 7 seats are available.
Good luck with your deliberations. Buy a Cayenne. You deserve it.

The Disco isn't an option. I have a '72 Rangie so that's my quota full
. We have a couple of modern Discos dotted around the family and they haven't proven reliable enough for what I need this for.
I like my old English cars so require one lazy, easy, practical, modern and uber reliable car for general use. I've been using a 130 for a while but going a bit bigger is going to make life easier, and it might as well be 4x4 for practical purposes as we move around quite a bit and having at least one car which can fit 3 adults plus sproggs would be logical.
Funnily enough my list had been whittled down to the x5 until I read the CH article and thought I'd investigate the Cayenne option which I'd overlooked but while ticking almost all boxes didn't appear to tick the crucial seating one.

We took some friends out on Saturday in our Cayenne Diesel - they've got a current model X5d. They just kept commenting on how much nicer the Cayenne felt - more comfort, more secure on faster B roads, smoother engine, nicer cabin....(Ours has PASM/Air/20" wheels).
However, like you they need a 7-seater and the Cayenne is a luxury 4/5-seater.

I remember the old Cayenne, the S drove beautifully and was only let down by an interior that was great in a sports car but just seemed to non-luxurious for a touring car. Maybe they got better later but the new one appears to be a lovely cabin space to be in.However, like you they need a 7-seater and the Cayenne is a luxury 4/5-seater.
I might go and see how much actual space does remain in the centre once a pair of Recarro Sports are fitted. As baby seats they are much smaller than normal as can be seen here:

The need for the space for an extra adult is only really when travelling and the Cayenne seems a very nice place to be sitting when just tooling around carrying out errands.
