Off on a road trip round the Southerm States of the US in a couple of weeks. A well know money saving advice website has recommended using a third party insurer to cover against huge excesses applied by the main hire companies.

Does anyone have any experience of using these instead of paying the excess waivers? And would you recommend?

Any advice much appreciated.

A bargain, my wife and I have annual cover for what you'd probably pay for two weeks from your rental company. Not had to make a claim but it's nice to just say, "no thanks, I'm covered" when the rental desk try and upsell.

Depends on the state of course. I've booked a car in Jersey City for my next trip - by taking a five minute train ride across from Manhattan I save $300, most of which is due to horrendous insurance in NY state for some reason.

We are starting in Atlanta, then into the deep South. All been done through Hertz. As you say Hackney, the idea of saying "no thanks im covered" is very appealling.

Will have a look at your recommendation, many thanks.

I've had this for a few years, same company as recommended above

Not had to claim but its saved me a fortune over the time I have had it, particularly in the US / Canada

As everyone else has said, its a nice feeling to say "its OK I'm covered" when they push the upsell at you
