Subaru Legacy was the first thing that came to mind but I'm yet to see one that fits my requirements. I really need an typical estate, not a blooody great 4x4, scratching my brain to find other options, any suggestions?

How about the smaller Impreza hatch/estate thing? Otherwise A4 or A6 Quattro, X-Type 2.5 or 3.0, Volvo V70 Allroad. Probably others, but can't quite think of any more at the moment.

If you're keen on Japanese and looking for something a bit rarer (and thirstier) Nissan Stagea or Mitsubishi Legnum

If not my A6 Avant Quattro has never let me down and seen me through a couple of harsh winters.

They did a 4WD version of the normal Octavia, too. It's quite rare, though.

Ive got an octavia tdi 4x4, not the scout model so no plastic body mouldings.
It's still got the haldex 4x4 system and the 'rough road package' which pretty much consists of increased ride height and underbody protection over brake lines and a big metal plate under the engine area.

Its been excellent over snow, muddy fields and potholed country roads, and 50mpg combined.

Should be able to get one near your budget.

I forgot about those - I think there was a Readers Rides thread about one.

I very nearly bought a 2006 jag x-type estate yesterday

32k miles, FSH, BRG with all the toys, Manual, 12 months MOT - all for 3995 quid!

I rang the guy, offered the money on the spot. He said someone is currently on way so see what happens- the arse only went and bought the car! gutted
