After my annual holiday I once again look forward to my 100 mile round trip commute. For the past 5 years I've never got more than around 50 from the various diesel wonder cars. Currently very bored of my A6 Tdi (no cruise and manual)and wondered what to get next to while 2 hours a day of my life in.
Essentially a what car thread (sorry) but is there anything with cruise, auto that will do 70+.

Let's assume I am not just going to move house or jobs!

Your bored of a manual and want an auto with cruise. Both of which will make a car more boring!

And less economical.

I have a similar thread running at the moment, was thinking of a small engined petrol. Of all the research I've done the best I've come up with his been a 1.4D 307, it looks like you could eek that sort of figure out of it, admittedly it might be frustrating to do it

With cruise and auto I'd guess not, my old diesel Fiesta could manage 70mpg but you needed to drive very carefully and stay at less than 60mph, it dropped rapidly to mid 50's at 70-80mph and low to mid 40's at 85+.

Very doubtful tbh.

Auto saps the mpg unless its something DSG but even then there are higher transmission losses so although BS official figures may say its more frugal, real world is less likely to show this.

Size wise, nothing A6 sized is going break 70mpg on anything other than a very flat commute with hypermiling techniques.

I'll be watching with interest though, because I'm currently doing 92 miles a day and getting low 50s and would love a practical swap out to get a bit more. 70 to the gallon would save me well over a grand a year.

Beat me to it!

Even the scooter will be about 95x as fun as an A6.

Hmm I do it, but I did get a bike, and it doesn't really do 70mpg. Nor 50.

Nor 40 for that matter. getmecoat

Give up auto and you are in with more of a shot.

Skoda Octavia Greenline must be able to get close to this, might find one with cruise. My Dad has a 170PS Superb with DSG (and cruise) and is now getting mid-50s on a run.

Auto and cruise are to stop my shoulder and hip wearing out! Tbh the auto could be off the wish list.

When you do 100 a day economy is important, being somewhere comfortable is important - being a driving god isn't....

My days of riding bikes in sub zero temps are gone.....it's never fun trying to thaw yourself out, and sub zero gloves really aren't.

Did think about a newer Insight but unsure of battery life (09 cars within budget) old ones appear to be rarer than a Norwegian speaking dog.

Is that computer-indicated or real mpg? These are often very different in VAG group products.

I would be very surprised if a Superb with the 170 TDi could average more than about 48-50mpg real mpg.

But the budget may need to creep a tad...

Honda C90 and fit it with one of those throttle locks like you get on outboard motors.
