Wondering where the 'go-to' place for private number plates is?

I'm looking to sell some corkers I picked up from the DVLA.

Thanks in advance for any steers.

Primo Registrations is a good starter for 10, the owner is on PH as well and he's well known (and a top bloke too).

There are a couple of other numberplate chaps on here too.

I would say people would go to the DVLA, like you did smile

Obviously you can register them with the dealers.

Failing that there's PH or Ebay or if they are really good ones my Dad has had success with the Sunday Times

However selling plates tends to take a while.

Thanks (especially thunderspook! rolleyes)

Considered Sunday Times but by heaven they know how to charge. With 9 plates on offer I'd be looking at a large amount each week. Something like £90 for the smallest insertion.

Looking at putting something in Top Marques, much more reasonable at £40 for all 9 plates. Trouble is, I've got two belters for the Veyron and that's a very specialised market. Veyron owners probably have their own newspapers!

Private Plates are not a quick turnaround. Could easily be a year or four before the right buyer comes along.

What are they? The other thing is how many Veyrons are there in the UK and of those people with that much cash are they really going to want a car specific plate over 1XXX or a single single etc?

Understood. Wasn't expecting them to fly out the door.

I didn't go in for any of this fudged spelling/spacing nonsense, nor try and gamble on anyone's initials. However I've got some superb plates that reference specific cars. That way they can be sold on with the car, hopefully adding some value in the process (unlike personalised plates that are unique to you).

My point is, I've gone for the plates I'd like if I had the car in question. I'm very confident if I can get the right people to know they're for sale, I'll move them on. Not looking for silly money either. So it's a question of finding out how to get them noticed in the right places.

Surely posting them on this thread would be a good start?

Not sure that's allowed but they're already in the classifieds here.

But if I had a Veyron, I'd want one of these plates on it.

So good that nobody else wanted them?

Stick 'em on ebay.

I couldn't believe they were still available but I guess in the Veyron's case, as has been posted, low digit count numbers might be preferable.

It is extremely rare for a plate to add value to a car when selling it. It may make it more interesting, but it won't add value.

If you have bought the plates expecting to make huge returns then you'll be very disappointed. If they have been on the DVLA site and not been picked up since they were put on there then why do you think that is? Both the DVLA and dealers, along with investers, scour the available numbers and would have bought previously.

If you want me to give you an honest appraisal of what you have please send them across to me and I'll let you know.

I find eBay is best, you can put them up with a starting or asking price of what you would ideally want, but with a "best offer" so's not to scare people off!

I'm looking for another cover plate by the way, so feel free to email me a list of what you have thumbup

Very aware of all that MrReg, but the plates I have found are ones I'd like on my cars. In fact I found them from looking at plates for my cars.

Yes I'm very surprised that they haven't been picked up yet but I guess there are a lot of plates out there and only so much time. I also think the private plate dealers are not that up on their cars and go more for the personalised side of things. I don't go in for the 'DA51 SEY' for £30k side of things as I wouldn't want that on my car even if I was called 'DASIEY' and dyslexic!

That is a pure racket but if people want to pay big money for that then good luck to them.

I bought V12V JJ for my V12 Vantage and I bought a few others while I was at it, that's how it started then I got a bit carried away! For example If I don't get what I want for V12V GB I'll put that on my car and sell V12V JJ, confident I'll get what I paid for it. I also think it would be attractive should I ever be forced to sell my car (I'd never part with it willingly). It's a cracking plate for a V12 Vantage.

Just using the above for example mods, hope that's OK. As mentioned all my other plates are for sale in the number plate classifieds here.

hang on - earlier on, you said and I quote "I didn't go in for any of this fudged spelling/spacing nonsense" and yet here, you're advertising "V12V JJ" - legally V12 VJJ and other mis-spaced V12 Vxx plates too - for presumably well over the £500 or so you paid to DVLA? You seem to sit in the very racket you referred to? confused

Putting plates like that on an Aston would simply devalue the car.

.
I understand where you are coming form but I personally see it from the other side of things. I bought 2 registrations that spell RHYS F for the exact reason that it is my name nad I can keep them for cars and motorbikes my entire life. i.e. they are actually good value. How long do most people keep cars? 2 maybe 3 years? so from your advert £5.5k for V12V GB is not a good investment as it certainly won't add £2k of value let alone £5k. Also it is a registration which has to be mis-spaced to make any sense. Trust me after a tug or two form the cops the novelty of a mis-spaced reg wears off, let alone one you've just paid 5k for.

Comparing to other regs in the classifieds you can buy V8 BRG for £4k,or V12 BRG for £5k, both of which I think is a better plate for a green V8/V12 than either of those other 2.

I just saw W16 AWE which you are right is quite good for a Bug but as i said above if you have a million pound car the chances are you have an interest in cars and would therefore already have another (and better) private reg.

I wish you the best of luck in selling them and genuinely hope you do make money on them, all I'm really saying in a rambling sort of way is that people pay up big money for things that spell their initials / name or word but generally not for a plate which says the name of a car they are then going to sell.

Best of luck

I would echo xPOW & R11YSF above.

I've just seen the plates that you have and the prices that you are asking for them. I'm afraid none of them will add value to the car when you're coming to sell it, however I wish you well with selling them.

Exactly so!

I'd not looked through the Classifieds number plates section before, some hilariously optimistic prices in there isn't there? laugh
