I thought I would ask the PH collective for their advice on this (even though it may turn out to be a divided opinion...)

How would you go about valuing a personal plate? I know there are some threads on here that suggest the companies specialising in Transferring Registrations wink tend to, shall we say, have an impressive profit margin. There is also the 'Sunday paper' route, but is that actually cost effective?

My father passed away a month ago, so we need to value his plate for probate. We are also considering selling it, depending on the valuation. Of course, we would like the 'valuation' to be quite low, but sell it for a sensible price!

I won't reveal the plate on here just yet (other than it's of the "1 xxx" variety), but I am happy to PM people if that helps.

As with all things, the plate is only worth what someone will pay for it! Most of the 1 XXX variety appear to be advertised in the mid £20k region but I assume that this also depends on the 'popularity' of the three initials e.g. 1 FER would be aimed at the supposedly wealthy Ferrari fraternity and be advertised at a huge price whilst 1 XVX may spend a long time unsold at even a couple of grand awaiting Xavier Victor Xylophone to pop along who just happens to also want a personal plate. However, what plates are advertised for and what they actually sell for may be two completely different amounts - I have seen a couple of forums where plates are 'lodged' by individuals with well known companies where they are advertised at prices where the individual has also stated they will accept an offer at a quarter of that price! Probably best to ask some of these companies what they are prepared to buy and/or sell the plate for and take a reasonable view yourself.
