Hi all am new to the Jag section, at present I have a BMW 335d and having had it for three years now am feeling its time to move on and my bones tell me it time for an XKR. I will have around 27K to 28k to spend on one of about 07 or 08 year. I don't know too much about them but will start to "gen" up on them on Google tonight. I've been to a couple of main Jag dealers and there doesn't seem to be too many about at the moment.

Can anyone on here tell me I am doing the correct thing, what I should be looking for and what weaknesses do they have, if any. I know fuel economy is completely different to what I have been used to but it won't worry me too much as the car will spend most of the year in my garage apart from when I come back home to drive it.

So really any info would be really appreciated thanks

Hi
I made this same move not so long ago. I had a 335i (not 335d) M Sport (which was a great car) and then bought a 58reg XKR and love it. Its a very different vehicle to the BMW. The jag ride is allot better but more of a GT than a sports car. Power delivery is very similar but the Jag looses rear traction easier. The jag paddle shift is one of the best i have had and again better than the BMW's.
So far its been very reliable, fuel varies between 23mpg on a combined cycle to 33mpg on a motorway run driving fairly carefully.
The main thing you will notice is the BMW was very much a Q car and slips under the radar but the Jag is noticed everywhere and attracts allot of attention.
Differences...., jag is 20% cheaper to insure (i could not believe this), road tax about the same, jag servicing is a bit cheaper, tyres the same about £1k a set, jag fuel consumption a little worse by about 10-15%, depreciation about the same and finally the way the jag makes you feel when driven or just sitting on the drive 100% up on the BMW....

Thanks for that, I've been around a couple of dealers, one in Northampton, Norwich and Ipswich and they told me similar with the price of a set of tyres which is not too bad. Are there any pit-falls or any thing i should look out for when i go to look?

Also what warranty can i get, how does it work, can i get extended warranty on a used car and what's the limitations, 60k or 100k miles or is it age based? and must it have Full dealer service History to qualify?

Hi phumy, I just bought one in Norwich, you possibly looked at it? (08 in Pearl Grey) My budget was about the same as yours and got a bit knocked off so very happy smile I had the X100 XKR before so cannot compare it to the BMW but from what I've read and looked at on various sites, it all seems good. If it is as good as the previous XKR I'll be delighted, if it's better I'll be over the moon woohoo

Hi Carbon, I was there on Saturday afternoon and they only had an 2011 in black and a 2012 in red metallic, which were well above my price range, so didn't see yours..

Im not in any rush to buy as, i go back overseas this week to work, im thinking that maybe best time for me to buy will be around January when no other bugger is buying hoping there might be some discounts about.

I thought that too but temptation got the better of me biggrin

Have been crawling through Autotrader and there seems there are a few nice ones about, i would prefer a dark interior rather than a light colour.

In terms of what to look for, i could not find any common themes apart from corrosion on the doors but this only seems to be on 2006 models.
I got a late 2008 58 reg XKR with 48k miles for £26k from Jaguar main agent in Silver with black leather, they also included new disks/ pads and new tyres all round which i felt was a fair deal, As i only do about 3-4 k per year, the miles will average out soon. The jag approved used warranty is 100k or 1year.

Thanks EuroBHP sounds a good deal you got there especially with the discs, pads and tyres in the deal. How much is a set of discs and pads fitted, if you don't mind me Asking?

I'm also looking to make a move on an XKR and for around a similar price as the OP.

A couple of things to bear in mind. There was a slight cosmetic change to the rear drivers side panel when they moved the radio aerial from the back side to somewhere in the back end of the car. For me this makes a big impact. Something that I think spoils the (alloy bodied) original car is the Ford Cortina areal that pops up when you have the radio on. Jaguar changed this around 57 or 08 plate. So bear this in mind when looking.

Another thing is iPod connectivity - to some this is not important. But as someone who has a bit of a thing for all things music it’s a high importance. Some of the XKR's do not have iPod connectivity - think it was an option till around 57 - 08 plate again. If it has the B&W upgrade it should have the IPod connector in the centre armrest.

Rhythmic that's an interesting point about the aerial, i thought i had read they were built into the rear "spoiler", where does the Ford Cortina part come into It?

On an asides do they have full connectivity for phones as in phone buttons on the steering wheel and Bluetooth connection for It?

look at picture number 6.. you can see the pop up Cortina aerial on the right rear side.

Looks like a remote control car when I see them like this.

So bear in mind when looking at 07 cars. Some might be the older style regestered later or they could be the newer one.

Aerial removed 2008MY. Also get a car with the lux sport interior. This will be your biggest challenge. The lux Interior is now standard, but early cars had it as an expensive option. IMHO the 'standard' leather isn't up to par. You can tell if the car has lux interior as the seats have 16 way adjustment controls & are perforated.

Happy hunting. All cats from main dealer will come fully serviced & 12 months warranty. If I were you I'd spend another £8k & buy a 5.0 XK or XKR. The facelifted models are the car it should have been from the start.

Have a look on the jaguar forums (uk site) there are plenty of threads on the bluetooth side of the car. Some people struggle to get the phones paired if the phone is very new. Some people struggle with iphone 4 etc.. But as i dont yet own one I'm not sure.

They do have the buttons on the steering wheel for the hands free calling.

I have read that the Facelifted car the 5.0 V8 is a bit fidgety on rough roads and some people prefer the ride on the 4.2 cars.

I'm after the 4.2 SC version.

But would be good to hear from people who have owned or driven the two types of car. I know the suspension is set-up differently (4.2 vs. 5.0)

Can any of you guys give me a ball park figure for servicing and maintenance cost for an average over about 3 or 4 years taking into account the smaller and larger servicing costs, tyres and the like. I know tyres will cost around a grand a set but what kind of mileage are you getting from fronts and more importantly rears?

Also has anyone gone for an aftermarket exhaust and would fitting one of these affect a Jaguar Warranty?

Roughly speaking...
£1000 set of tyres which last 15k miles
£1200 brakes all disks and pads last 30k miles
Servicing £350 per year or 10k miles
Gearbox and diff service at 60k mikes recommended by experts... Roughly £500
£xxx per year for odds and sods.... Contingency.... I never bother with warranties after they expire...
So depending on what miles you do and the way you drive these are rough figures.... Plus your £475 road tax per year
You should find this not too different to the 335d apart from he road tax...and fuel.

That's brilliant and very similar to the BMW thanks for that.
