Out of interest, which wedges were limited slip diffs fitted to?

Weird i was just reading about this!!..Apparently the early 350i had an option of non-limited or a "powerlock" limited slip diff but from around the time the "A" frame 350i appeared the powerlock diff was a standard fitting..All bigger engined wedges thereafter were fitted with these..Hope this helps..Cheers...Ziga

Torsen Diff was an option on 390's, don't know about other big wedges

Isn't there a way you can tell which is just by making a visual comparison?

FWIW my '85 350i didn't have an LSD diff (although one's going back in).

I have a brochure of the period, for the series 2 on cars, which clearly states the LSD became standard around then.

So, yes, the hypothesis that cars with the A frame suspension should have an LSD seems reasonable.

The powerlock diffs should have a tab fastened on by one of the lower rear cover bolts with the letters "PL" embossed.

Simon.

You can find it out by doing a quick test:
Raise both rear wheels in the air and turn one wheel forward (gearbox out of gear wink).
If the other wheel rotates in the same direction it is lsd,
if it turns the other way it is non-lsd.

Interesting as on my original invoice for the car (TVR 350i S2 late 89) the Powerlock LSD was an option. I cannot make out the price but it was 3 figs as was the power steering and so called Heavy Duty drive shafts and joints!

I know Torsen Jag diffs were around in the 80s but I didn't know it was a wedge option - can anyone confirm that?

Does anyone know how to differentiate between a Torsen and a Powrlock diff?

Yes my 390 had the Torsen fitted from new, it was supposed to be standard but the garage charged me extra for it.

It has Torsen stamped into the rear bit of the diff.
