Is it cheeky to ask a garage to use my oil?
Discussion
Car being serviced tomorrow. I've got 5 litres of oil which I doubt I'll use between services as I'll sell the car in the next 12 months.
Is it cheeky to drop the car off and tell to use my oil for the oil change? I always thought they make a mark up on the oil they use so would rather use theirs?

It's weird - I wouldn't dream of asking with most of out cars, but on my Merc, the dealer suggested it. They charge £15/litre so near as dammit £100 for 6.5L which I paid about £40 for.I assume the dealer doesn't pay more for it than I did so they cheerfully threw away £60 of profit which from a business point of view seems ridiculous.
Well, some of our mistrusting customers do it. of course garages make a bit of money on oil, i know it seems to be an offence in most peoples eyes that a garage would dare to try and make a profit... we buy oil in barrels of 600L, if you buy your 7 litres in 1l bottles, lets say it costs you £10 a litre, thats £70. so if it costs the garage £5 a litre and they charge you £7 is that such a bad thing? your usually, if not always going to get it cheaper as part of a service. it will also be the right oil, rather than what you think is the right oil/what the shop your buying it from guesses it is, especially in a specialist garage.
but no, by all means do it if you want to, just make sure you have put the chassis number into your vehicle database to make sure its correct for your specific engine and model year... or let the garage do it. otherwise dont be annoyed if they give it back to you because its wrong, or just use it because you specified it had to be used, despite it being wrong.

Any decent garage will be more than happy to use the oil you supply.
They may have barrels of a few types / grades but you want to use something specific. Nothing wrong in that. I always used to supply the oil for my e36 and e46 M3's when they went in. For my more 'normal' cars I didn't bother.
It's no different to buying a set of lowering springs off the internet and asking the garage to fit them, is it?

I did it with Renault for my Clio 182 Cup as I tracked it and wanted to use a good fully synthetic due to the extended high temperatures the engine would see.
I never trusted them that they had changed it after they told me that the spare wheel had a full 8mm of tread. It didn't have a spare!
