A good friend and I are both getting very close to buying our first Porsches, obviously horror stories about IMS/RMS, bore scoring, radiators etc mean we are both leaning towards an OPC for the initial purchase.

However, seeing as there are some relative bargains/ideal spec cars from independents, what is Porsche's official stance on their warranty given a car that's under 2/3 years old?

ie If I bought a 997 GTS from an indie that's only 18 months old - my mind = 18 months OPC warranty as it's 3 years from new...

BUT, some have said they will not warrant a car not sold by an OPC.

IF this is true, how could a 1 year old Cayman from an indie, not still be under OPC warranty?

Any genuine advice would be appreciated!

Many thanks in anticipation!

If you're buying a GTS, you don't need to worry about bore scoring, IMS or RMS. These are issues in the gen1 911, boxster and cayman. The DFI engines in the gen 2 cars have so far proved very reliable.

An 18 month old car should have 6 months of manufacturers warranty and 12 months of extended warranty. If you buy an OPC car you'll get a 2 year warranty. Some independents also offer decent aftercare service / warranty.

I'm probably looking at an S about £45k though did see an OPC Cayman R at £43k (gone now)- his aim is for a GTS (and I know you'll highly recommend one).

The faults I gave were more indicative of what can happen and cost to rectify, scary stuff if you're unlucky enough to have them.

Harbour cars do a 2 year warranty but these and most indies won't be anywhere near as comprehensive. We'd both want OPC warranty whether via OPC purchase or subsequent extended warranty.

Both the gen2s and the CR have DFI engines so it's all good.

True but I'm sure I heard on here some time ago that a Gen 2 911 had bore-scoring?

BTW, hope your nipper and SWMBO are doing well are you're settling in to the fatherhood thing - Mine's 5 and she's brilliant!

I am not aware of any instances of bore scoring on the DFI engine. This is an issue with the M96 family of engines.

Fatherhood is great and we are all settling in fine. It is hard work though! I still can't get my head around it!

I think you can buy a Porsche warranty for any Porsche under 10 years old and under 100,000 miles.................as long as it passes their 111 point check?

Thanks guys, but...

Perhaps I should've put this:

Has anyone bought a newish Porsche from anywhere else than an OPC and had the remaining warranty honoured?

Quote from OPC website: 'Also a car must meet the terms and conditions of the Approved Warranty and it can be purchased until your car is 9 years old or has covered 125,000 Miles (or 8 years for a 2 year policy).'

Depends on how old it is.

Year 1 and 2:
The original manufacturer's warranty will be honoured no matter who sells the car.

Year 3 onwards:
The Porsche extended warranty has text in the terms and conditions that say it is only transferrable as a private sale. If you buy from an OPC, they put a new two year warranty on. If you buy from an Indie, that warranty ceases. The Indie may sell it with their own warranty, but it won't be the Porsche one. Also, once purchased from an Indie you can personally and independently buy the extended Porsche warranty, but only after you've owned it for 90 days (and it passes the 111 point check).

Don't some indi's also advertise on behalf of a private seller (for a percentage), that way the seller can transfer the existing OPC warranty to the new buyer?

This - effectively what I meant with the warranty was if the car is 18 months old - it will have 6 months of manufacturer's warranty, which will be honoured by Porsche. It will then have 12 months of extended warranty which will have the caveats described above.
