I've got fuel, compression and air... but no spark.

Is there some sort of resistance check I can do across the ignition coil? Voltage test maybe? I forgot and left the key in the run position for several hours listening to the radio and working on the car last weekend. I'm wondering if I cooked the coil?

Also, when rebuilding the car I'm wondering if maybe I hooked the alt wires to the coil and visa versa. I kinda think I did because the key on/off and I'd get power at both coil terminals, and the coil should get no power with the key off. So I switched the wires between the coil and alternator. Now the coil gets no power unless the key is in the run position... as it should be?

Anyways, would someone be kind enough to run out to the garage, and tell me which colour wires go to which terminal on the coil... same goes for the alternator.

I'm so rediculously close to having my car run for the first time in years... please help.

I think I sorted out the above mess... I switched the alt/coil wires, but still no spark... so I tried reversing the wires on the ignition module... that got me spark. I checked the fuel pump. The FP runs with the key in start position but goes out in run position. If you hold the air flow meter sensor open the FP comes back on... appears to work as I`d expect it.

I sprayed a little fuel directly into the plenum to see if the engine would at least cough... it did... ran roughly for about 8 seconds even. I don`t think my fuel injectors are firing though...

Thoughts, ideads and criticism welcome....

I gave things some thought. Earlier today I was working around the ecu and the relay panel. I stumbled across this one little jumper wire with blade connectors on it right next to the starter relay. It had a diode in the centre, which had broken off. I fixed the break but think I might have put the diode in backwards. I hope that`s the fix-it I need. I remember once back in 2007 my car stopped running and fixing that very same joint made it run again. Tomorrow will tell. *crosses fingers*

The said diode is for the light lift motors if put in the wrong way it will blow so have a few to hand! To check the diode a simple test with a test meter is to check for continuity one way then reverse the probes and it should be open circuit. Likewise firing the diode can cause other fuses for blow as a result of it protecting itself so have a good check of the fuse panel

  • sigh* Well thanks for the info, it`s good to know. I only wish it were the source of my problem with the injectors not firing... piss me off... I hate EFI.... seriously considering converting to a carb...

Assuming Flapper Efi:

Your ignition circuit will be something like this

Your Efi circuit similar to this

Coil is covered here along with all ignition components.
