what do you mean exactly by long-term - years? A landlord would want flexibility incase situations change - hence a year long tenancy with renewal options is going to be most likely

Because tennents can be scum s so it is essential business practice to always keep them on short term rental contracts.

Blame UK landlord & tennent law. On the continent the landlord is protected, in the UK the protection, for what it is worth, is only credible for short term leases.
