Im no expert, but Ive seen the Emerald set up in use, and it looks very good. Would be my choice I think.

Generally, the more you pay, the better an EMS gets................

So, aftermarket systems in order pretty much of cost:

MESL TAG 320 http://www.mclarenelectronics.com/Products/Product...

BOSCH MS 5.5 http://www.bosch-motorsport.com/en-US/literature/e...

Pi Innovo open ecu http://www.pi-innovo.com/products/openecu

Motec M1 http://www.motec.com/m1/M1overview/

MBE (various) http://www.mbesystems.com/index.html

DTA http://www.dtafast.co.uk/

Emerald http://www.emeraldm3d.com/

Megasquirt http://www.emeraldm3d.com/

and various others!

Basically, the MESL system will cost you about £500k, the Megasquirt £500. Your choice...... ;-)

in what budget? id say motec is better than the ones listed but its 3times the price... pectal is top notch as well but another step on in price to motec!

the application is important to know, but for a 4pot id say omex and dtm? are good choices... personally id look to find whats popular for the engine and go from there as its a very open question otherwise

I have the EMS 8860. It's supposed to be good but I don't need it now that I've found a cheaper solution with an OBD socket for my Chevrolet LS1 V8, so I'm selling it along with a matching data logger. It's brand new.

I visited Omex earlier this year and I was very impressed with their R&D, quality control and customer support facilities.
