One of life's little ambitions realised
Discussion
15 years ago at the age of 18 my best friends uncle (the one and only Don Palmer of Donpalmer.co.uk) introduced me to the concept of BMW M Power. It was here sat in the back seat of his white E28 M5 affectionately known as "Boris", going sideways at 90mph at a frosty Bruntingthorpe, I knew that one day I'd have to own an M5.
The years rolled by, cars came and went. Some memorable, some not. The older I got, my priorities changed. Commuting to work meant I settled for a 530D for the last two years. It did everything a car should, yet something was missing. A house move nearer to work meant I now only travel 8 miles on a working day. The realisation that I could realistically now run an M5 has been eating away at me for months.
The grown up in me told me it was a bad idea. Did I really need an M5? No. I had talked myself out if it.
I must have spent hours watching Chris Harris videos on YouTube. His car purchases may seem ludicrous to some and crate some debate here in PH.
Im pleased to report that the Chris Harris effect has given me the kick in the arse I needed. I've now realised a dream 15 years in the making. Last week I bought an E39 M5. There, I fecking did it!
I'm a happy man.

Adam, welcome to PH. Your tale is similar to mine and, for sure, many other PH'ers.
For me it all started when I was six years old watching a 2.4S 911 being driven through the Swiss Alpes. Then three years later my uncle arrived at our home in a Viper Green 2.7 ltr 911; I was ecstatic. That day stuck with me throughout my childhood. Within my boys mind I lived and breathed all things flat-6. Sometime around the age of 16 or 17yrs something really struck a cord; out of which came the idea of owning my first 911 on my 25th birthday. It seemed total madness, where could I possibly get the money to afford to buy and run a 911?
Well, August 20th 1990 saw me hand over a large cheque to a Porsche specialist in Surrey. With cheque cleared, the following Saturday I arrived to collect a stunning 3.0ltr 911 SC Sport Targa in Black. I was as excited as an excitedly excited thing could possibly be. Six weeks later I was 25 years old and haven't stopped smiling since. I'm 46 now and the knees still wobble every time I hear an air-cooled flat-6.
I hope you get the same lifetime pleasure with your new toy

Great tale. Certain cars go beyond just being 4 wheels, it's how they make you feel. For me it all started when I was six years old watching a 2.4S 911 being driven through the Swiss Alpes. I still feel the E39 M5 is one of the best cars in the world.
After a day hooning through the lake district in it yesterday I have to agree. Supple yet responsive. Quiet when cruising and a great V8 growl when you gun it. it looks understated yet 'special' compared with the normal E39 5 series. It's useable every day.It is all things to all men....and women, my girlfriend loves driving it too.
When you factor in today's prices for decent well looked after ones its an irresistable package.....was for me anyway!

Well done sir! I hope it is better than you imagined. I too have similar dreams involving a noble m12 gto
I had the pleasure of driving a GTO 3R again thanks to Don Palmer a few years ago. Wonderful cars. Enjoy
Well done that man. I know how you feel but to realise this ambition at such a tender age ........ it means only bigger and grander ambitions will follow - what car for the 'forties' and then the 'fifties' ........ more dreams required now.
Myself, I've just realised the ambition I've held since a mere 'whippersnapper' - always wanted one and in 1996 first clapped eyes on the very model I have lusted after since and, a month ago, acquired a rather nice example. So the guy in the Ferrari F355 grinning from ear to ear may well be me!

I promised myself a TVR Chimaera by the time I was 30... it wasn't looking very likely but after a couple of good years at work I picked up my new toy in March... (Aged 29 1/3). I love it - can't see myself ever selling it (unless I get enough cash put away for an Aston V8 Vantage LeMans...)
All I need to do now is learn to drive the M5 like this.....

I'm sure we all have these dreams and memories from good motor experiences as a kid. The first car that really made an impact for me was my first girlfriend's brother's R5 GTT. It was modified and boy did it pull, I knew I had to have one one day.
I lived that dream, but it being 10 years on from that original day, they're a bit long in the tooth and tbh apart from the awesome experience of driving an older motor, it didn't really live up to the expetation as it was pretty knackered.
But I still love them, and I will own another, once I have a garage!
