Noise when releasing clutch on downshifts. Video included

Hi all

So since i changed to 6 speed box (modded by Gearboxman) with Fidanza clutch and Helix clutch i have this noise when lifting the clutch. Normally only on downshifts if i don't blip the throttle. If i do blip the throttle and then change there is no noise.

My old 5 speed used to do it once in a while, but now it is all the time.

The car drives completely fine apart from this noise!

Is it something to worry about?..

Doesn't sound particularly reassuring does it! Is it slipping? Can you feel through the pedal?

Normal for a Helix uprated clutch.

Kevin, Thanks for that Does yours make the same noise? Mine is 6 puk and rated to 550ftlb

No ben, Its not particually reassuring but i also assumed it was normal. You can feel it through the pedal a little bit.

Anyone else get this noise?

Mine makes the same noise when changing down 2 cogs, ie 5th to 3rd when pushing on. Fairly sure mine is a standard clutch, it has always done this and hasn't got any worse.

Julian, yes mine makes the same noise & i'm on my third one with no failures other than one caused by myself !

Should have said that only happens when being gentle & going slowly, so the answer is ........

After I got a new clutch fitted it is doing the same on mine as well. Usually when I change down from 4-3rd.

Been like that for about 3 years - nothing has ever happened, car has been fine.

Yep mine does the same, with both standard clutch and helix one, worse in lower gears and when cold, always thought it was some sort of clutch release bearing, if it has one, my 1976 mini used to do it

I put it down to a tiny amount of backlash between the splines of the drive plate but could be way off with that. Or possibly just where the clutch has bedded in in the accelerate direction, much like applying the brakes after reversing.

Mine only makes the noise when warm and changing down to 4th or 3rd and dragging the revs up quite far (4.5k+).

This thread first came up years ago,possibly 2004,and was never properly resolved then.
I seem to remember that a small diameter shaft somewhere in the gearbox was involved and it was due to this shaft having to pick up speed quickly as the clutch was released from higher revs.
I've found that double-declutching will stop it but that isn't always convenient.

normal im afraid... my triple plate clutch is even noisier if I don't blip it on downshift so be thankful lol

Same here. My standard clutch or the organic helix was fine but the 6-paddle helix one has always buzzed at slow speeds hot or cold. If passengers ask, the car farted.

Mine does exactly the same

Mine has always done same on the standard clutch, I just give it a bit of throttle on down change and it smooths it out, feels weird at first when coming up to a roundabout but still slightly on the throttle on approach but the car seems to respond nicely to being driven more aggressively.
