Hello.

I've seen a few people on the forum call other people a "driving god", and I'm confused.

Is "driving god" used ironically to imply that the driving god is actually much more rubbish than they think they are?
Or is "driving god" used to label elitist drivers, but in a disapproving way?
Or is it used because it was on Top Gear and I'll never understand what the hell it means without watching Dave for months?
Or it it just used as a random phrase with no real thought because lots of the fun words are censored and it's less likely to make people angry than using the words you really want to be using?

I think it's the second one, but it makes no sense to me that people on a motoring forum would disapprove of driving elitism. So I can't imagine it's really that one, which is why I'm confused.

Basically when someone uses it I can't tell if they are being friendly or clever or sarcastic or stupid.

Help, etc.

Thanks,

Muppet, Captain, Retarded.

It's a description of a driving style, like Driving Miss Daisy but instead of an old lady in the back you've got an omnipotent supreme being. See how God reacts when you fluff a gearchange yikes

It's not so much a slow day as an odd day - I have to have one of these pills every 6 hours or bad things happen, and I'm not allowed to eat anything before I take them, or within an hour afterwards, so my snacking routine is fked.

Sadly I've never worked in the same office as nervy, so cable-tieing a plastic bag over his head while knee-capping him with a cricket bat, or whatever, isn't an option I have open to me.

Yeah, I was disappointed when I read that too.

I think it's a derogatory term used when you dare to discuss things like understeer, oversteer, left foot braking, heel and toeing, when they don't believe you because they can't manage these things themselves.
I think it's more usually aimed at the types who express their disgust at modern cars' inclusion of DSC, ABS, PAS etc or, more amusingly, the ones who reckon they can always outbrake an ABS system.

^^ that, and a mixture of the first and third criteria. Basically anyone with absolutely no sense of personal fallibility, but the phrase was coined by hammond road testing a bowler wildcat (cba to dig out the clip).

I always thought it was a dig at the people on high horses who criticise others short comings as if they never make a mistake. For example your driving along and harry potter teleports into the middle of the road with an ivisibility cloak on and you have to swerve to avoid him. You post on ph about how much of a dick he is and that he doesn't pay rfl only to be hounded by driving gods for not pulling the fuse on your abs just incase and stopping 2 corners before because you were observing a full minute into the future.

Are there really drivers out there who think they are better than ABS? Blimey.

I always assumed it was used to refer to people who think they're a lot better at driving than they actually are.

TBF, ABS doesn't reduce braking distances, only prevent locking the wheel, though anyone who says they can always outbrake ABS in any and all situations is either a liar, has a carp ABS system, or is exceptionally good.

Yup, and ESP too. Scary huh?

These are exactly the sort that the derogatory term "Driving God" is aimed at, people who hugely over-rate their own ability.

I had a discussion with someone once who claimed he always turned his ESP/Traction control off when starting car car rolleyes - then he spouted some waffle about it being different his wife's car as DTC only switched on when pressing button. I just showed him what the page in the manual said (though whether that was wise as I am sure he would have started switching off DSC & DTC)
