I fancy a 4WD car - haven't had one for a couple of years.

BUT whenever I drive an Impreza I can't help but drive at licence losing speeds as that's where it comes alive.

Is there something that has lower limits BUT is not a 4motion type car (IE is 50:50 or RWD biased ?)

I don't mind something older like a V6 A4 Quattro but IIRC they too were FWD biased.

Is a V8 S4 more balanced or will I be doing 100+ everywhere ?

Budget £1k-£10k

Prefer NA rather than turbo.

Doesn't have to be that fast, sub 8 seconds would do.

Defender.

Also, a fast car doesn't lose your licence. Driving like a cock does.

You obviously haven't driven one in the right conditions, Defenders are HUGE fun.

4WD cars don't really "come alive"... do they?

The point is, they have endless grip and traction, and are devastatingly quick without all of the drama!

I've gone through most of Audi's 4WD stable... 2001 225 bhp TTR, 2004 B5 S4 Avant, 2007 R8, 2011 RS6 Avant.

I couldn't even describe the R8 handling as "coming alive" - it was sheer brilliance, and appeared to pivot rather than turn in, but I would imagine it would be described as "clinical" versus a similarly powered and specced RWD car.

They were all epic cars in their own right, but don't "come alive". The RS6 in particular, monsters its way above 70 leptons before you can blink. Even so, at lower rpm, it is fast but not devastatingly so... but to be using the 4k-7k rev range, and using the car where it is most effective (rolling acceleration) you'll be doing speeds which will see you banned. But, even at 90-100 leptons, the A-road handling is impeccable - to the point of being boring, if you were looking for a thrill.

XR4x4 - 126mph , 0-60 takes over 8 seconds but a 66% rear bias. Rumbly V6 soundtrack

ETA - but I note you already had a supercharged one so you'll be well aware of what they are like

An Evo / Impreza / Cosworth do at around 100+ on a twisty road.

I was wondering if there is some obscure / older 4WD which does closer to 70

Have you tried an Evo, or a Skyline GTR? Very different handling to the AWD Audis.

100+ on a twisty road is the issue here, though.

even 70 on a twisty road is going to be carnage if you run out of talent or find something coming the other way.
