Ive just checked my hydraulic lifter preloads with what I have at the moment.

The block was decked when the top hats were fitted but Andrew at Chesmans confirmed only 3 thou was needed off. I dont know the history of my 500 heads but they had 5 thou removed to flatten.
The cam is a Viper Typhoon.

I made 3 feelers at 20, 40 and 60 thou and checked all 16 preloads. All have come in within spec on the nearside bank but the offside has a wider spread with some clearances close to the minimum 20 thou and number 8 exhaust over the 60 thou. These checks were made with 1.2mm rocker pillar shims fitted.

Any thoughts ? What is the definate safe max preload i can run?

Adjustable rods would be the only real safe option

Could you spend a little more and get a set?

Having double checked its very close to spec. I have a bodge idea in mind to make it better.
I dont like adjustable rods and have heard too many stories. Adjustable roller rockers would be nice but waaay out of my budget at this time.
I guess its all down to uneven valve wear and the valve hieghts differing.

This engine is moving along now.... maybe a couple of long days burning the midnight oil might have it running sooner than later.
