What car (for a change!) opinions wanted

Right, currently drive a nissan 350z which has been remapped and its an awesome car - handles well, superb reliability, I love the looks and its well specced, but...
I'm currently doing more motorway miles than my old b road blasts, and to be honest a 3.5 v6 sitting at 75mph for mile after a mile seems a waste of both fuel (25-27mpg average) and the car. i also haven't really got attached to it, the engine seems very lethargic for 300bhp and seems almost dull compared to its looks and stats.
I'm looking at chopping it in for the dreaded diesel, but want something that's got reasonable performance (not really interested in 0-60) and looks nice, and can handle the odd b road excursion if needed.
So far i've narrowed it down to: Merc CLK CDI220 with AMG kit, 2006 44k miles and an Alfa JTDM 2007, 55k miles as the only forerunners. Had beemers and golfs before so would like something different and I'm slightly jaded and won't touch anything french..
Which would you lot pick? - going to try and arrange test drives this weekend, but like to have an idea before I go because I'm a salesmans dream once they get me engaged
