My girlfriend has just put a deposit on a 2.9 Boxster (from Porsche Bolton, albeit the car's coming from Wilmslow) and will be collecting next week.

Part of the package she's being offered are 2 so-called 'Smart Insurance' products, one against kerbing wheels and the other against minor scratches, chips and damage to the paint.

Has anyone come across these add-ons before and can anyone comment on whether they're worthwhile or just another way of the dealers lining their pockets (with no real value to the owner)?

Piccy: (I think she's done well - I actually like the Aqua Blue a lot).

Turbo 2 wheels look smashing on that car. Colour code the intakes.

the two products are the latest incentive to try & get your friendly salesman his little bag of marching powder.

i guess it all depends how how many tyres she bursts & whether she regularly scuffs her wheels or not?

We bought the tyre and wheel insurance from Wilmslow when we bought our Cayenne. We were led to believe that it was a Porsche policy, and if we had a problem we just took it into the OPC and we'd get it fixed.

My wife kerbed an alloy so we spoke to the OPC. They just pointed us at the policy detail, which was clearly a 3rd party product with no links to the OPC or Porsche at all, and we've since had to e-mail them photos, send them claim forms and call them repeatedly. A month later and we're still awaiting approval for the repair, which we were told won't be done at the OPC but one of their local repairers.

I'll let you decide whether you think this was worthwhile, but I won't be buying anything like that from them again.

Oh... and thats a beautiful looking car, by the way! Congratulations

I've had the Smart insurance with my last Boxster (white) and it was quite good (think it cost about £200 after I said I couldn't afford their original quote). But, since I had my car detailed and polished properly I didn't think it was necessary. My new 991 hasn't got it as it has already been detailed. I also took the tyre policy with the Boxster but haven't with the 991 as I've not punctured for ages. So, it depends on how lucky you are really. But I'd look into getting your car detailed though, and if you do, you'll probably get all your future cars done. Happy days.

There will be a limit as to how big the marks can be for you to claim on. There will also be a bit about how you can only park alongside Porsche approved curbs otherwise it invalidates the policy.

SMART (small automotive repair technology?) repairs are usually cheap, though not really to that high a standard. Any insurance would need to be very cheap because of that.

Sounds like just another OPC customer milking technique.

I received the alloy/tyre insurance as a gesture towards the faults on my brand new CR.

Reading through the small print, I'm glad I didn't have to pay for it, but comforted by the fact if anything happens, it 'should' be covered.

It does have limitations though, 5 claims in 3 years, 2 claims in a year etc, plus it seems unless the work required is severe, you might just end up with patched up work and multiple claims.

You have to use their selected repair companies for claims, which I imagine doesn't include OPC's, but it does state you can find your own garage and invoice them up a maximum limit, which might be the way around this.

I picked up a screw and a nail within three months. Not repairable. Two new tyres. The policy is cheaper than replacement tyres. No quibble getting the repair done and turned round in 2 hours. OPC East London.

I gave the dealer 2 chances to "SMART" repair the lacquer peeling on one of my wheels and the job was second rate. Not the fault of the OPC but who they were contracted to use. Looked ok from about 20 feet away but on close inspection was a quick fix which aged within 2 weeks and became obvious again.

I`d keep your money in your pocket and "IF" the worst happened - use a place with a good reputation
