So I want to get some winter wheels / tyres for my Yaris.

It's a 1.8SR which comes with 17" (x7) wheels and 205/45/17 tyres as standard. It's slightly different from most Yaris in that it has rear disk brakes instead of drums.

Looking at tyre size calculators I've estimated that I can reduce to 15" (x5.5) wheels with 185/60/15 tyres.

Has anyone also gone smaller successfully?
Assuming the ET is kept the same (+45) will the smaller wheels fit?
Am I going about this the hard way?

15x7 or 15x6.5 with 205/55R15 is what you want, 205/60R15 would give you more tyre choice and looks to be close enough in terms of rolling radius. Offset between ET37 and ET42 should be fine.

I went from 205/45 16 down to 165/65 14 I think with no problems. I found in the snow the skinnier the better. I didn't have any trouble with insurance either, just had to let them know when I swapped them back.

Have a look at www.mytyres.co.uk they do steel wheel/winter tyre packages, I got some last year for my Fiesta from them. They agree with your tyre size calculations by the way. I bought Vredestein Snowtracs which they also do for your car. I had run Vredestein Wintrac Xtremes on my Subaru for 4 years with no problems. Great tyres.
