Being the unprepared, poverty stricken fool that I am, I have let the M.O.T lapse on my BMW and I can't get it tested until Tuesday, because I am a plank.

In the interim I am driving my mothers 2002 1.1 Peugeot 106. A finer steed there never has been. I'm not even sure if it uses fuel, such is the potential economy of such a machine. It has no electric anything, the softest suspension I have encountered in a long time and steering to match the purest of Lotus' (Lotii?!)

The rub is, I am really quite excited to drive it for a few days. No, it hasn't got leather and comfort and an engine but it has so many things that my BMW doesn't have if you see what I am getting at. It is tiny, cheap, inconspicuous, you can rag it in every gear and still not break any speed limits, it can be parked practically anywhere, etc, etc, etc...

So who else revels in the guilty pleasures of driving something, shall we say, less than their normal car? I won't be able to reply much to this thread this evening but I thought I might get the ball rolling just the same to see if it gets many responses biggrin

I have a 106 of the same age and same engine, try driving it for more than a few days or down a motorway, the excitement soon goes. The softness of the suspension is rather hilarious though.

That is why I like it so much, because I don't have to have it for long and whilst I do have it I don't really need to go far, so it is just for fun and a change from my car biggrin

Nope, I don't think it's just you. smile
I enjoy the MGB even though it is worse in every objective way than a modern car. But it's fun to get the best out of it.

It's about enjoying driving, simple as that.

I fall in love with hire cars on a regular basis (well, once every holiday), the last was a sweet LHD Bulgarian Ford Fiesta 2009 facelift Mk6 in unfaded red, manual, petrol 1.6 with a few toys. Worked great in the narrow narrow streets, for parking, in the partial snow and offroad.

Almost bought one afterwards but the secondhand prices were too rich for me. Would still have one though.

Hmmm, dont think I'd let you borrow my car!

Agreed on all counts though, my 1.0 winter daily Suzuki Alto is great fun,I genuinely miss driving it in the summer!

We used to have a 1.1 106 as a dealership runabout many years ago and I hated it tho, proper hated it, but I cant remember why, maybe I was young and foolish!

Not just you. Enjoy it.

Years working in a garage taught me that the most surprising cars could be fun, and conversely it taught me that a lot of cars you really aspire to are actually boring to drive.

To the point that I bought a 206 to accompany my Mercedes and had years ragging it around at safe speeds but far nearer the limit than you would achieve in something quicker. While also knowing I was using no fuel, it would cost nothing if I broke it or crashed it, and there were no expensive failures to wait for. And knowing I had something speedy when I wanted it.

The Mercedes came out for track days and weekends, but would never be as light and chuckable as 950kg of hatch.

My mother always wants to borrow my 1.2 Corsa, for these exact reasons (she drives an 09 plate BMW 320d). She just raves about how much fun she had when she gives it back!

If ever I get the chance to drive anything, I'll always take it and will always be a little bit excited to do so regardless of what it is. I've done thousands of miles in C-segment hire cars and enjoyed every bit of it. I like the experience of using different controls and getting used to how everything responds in a different way.

For some odd reason I was even quite happy to drive my Dad's Galaxy, despite my wife owning almost exactly the same car (in fact ours is quicker!).

I like cars. Sure, I like some better than others, and there are loads that I wouldn't want to own, but on the whole, I like them all.

Driving something light/simple can be a ton of fun.

I plan on soon buying a fiat cinq sporting, it will have less then half the power of my daily focus (which has a whopping 125hp), but i look forward to the simpleness

It's amazing, there can be good cars at any level of the market. Another example of "cheap but good" is the Fiat Panda.

When I met my GF she had a 106 Zest 1.1. Brilliant little car to drive on rural roads. It inspired me to get a Saxo VTS which was also great but now, offered overtaking options too.

My daily, and indeed only drive is a Note, so it's not easy finding something less than that, though Nissan succeeded when they gave me a Micra courtesy car. I can't say it was fun, but I do also always look forward to driving something different as well. Through all the 15 year old asthmatic Hiluxes, Datsun Laurels, tow trucks, sttigolfs, Mk 2 Kadetts and all the rest, even the Micra, the only one I have ever regretted climbing into was a 2006 Vectra estate. There was simply absolutely nothing about that car to look forward to when driving it, ironically the only thing about it that impressed me was how they had managed to make a car quite so unmotivating to get in to.

I had a 1.1 106 a few years back, great little car. It would sip fuel and loved to be ragged. Would have another in a heartbeat. Underated and way better than the Fiesta of similar vintage.

Small cars these days are just too big.

We had a VW K70 as a works snotter in 1979 it was 7 years old went like stink and was always in demand. Something had died in it though so you had to drive with the windows open whatever the weather. Happy days
