Just wondering if those that were considering/wanted to consider an S6 engined car have altered there opinion, or purchasing criteria in any way having seen the posts on the reliability poll threads?

No !

But fairly recently I decided not to buy a Tamora / T350 and buy a SEAC ...

Must say - I always was of the opinion that I would only want one for the first 2 years of it's life (warranty cover) and would sell after that !

When I was looking to buy 18 months ago I was told that somewhere around a third of the engines would have problems. It looks like the survey supports that. I bought one that had been done twice already to try and shorten the odds but I knew there was a chance of further problems.

I still think it was the right decision as what else could I have got that compared for 25k?

I can't think of any other car (except another model of TVR) that:

a. looks so good
b. is so powerful and entertaining to drive
c. gives open top motoring
d. is such good value for money
e. can be had for £25-30K

If anyone can give me some suggestions, then I want to hear them.

me neither - all the poll has done has made me more prepared for heartache when its due another rebuild

Love the car, wont be getting rid...but when considering the purchase we really thought that with a later car and some mechanical sympathy the engine would be good for 10-15K miles a year...now Im anticipating a rebuild every year to 18 months...I'll certainly be getting a good extended warranty each year !

Th lack of "goodwill" with regards to engine values has seriously dented my faith in TVR more than the two threads. It smacks of not caring, so for now there wont be a Tuscan on my drive.
Also finding out that the average life of an engine before its first rebuild is approx 13k,and that many have a second rebuild to does not help.
Put the two together and if i carry on with my current milage i can expect a rebuild before two years of ownership (its not going to be a new car).Warrenty companies seem to have a max payout of about £2-3k,if you can get the money out of them.?This leaves anything between £2-6k more to pay,add this to the fact that cars are literally taking months to get back makes the purchase in the near future for me unrealistic

If only a warranty would cover the rebuild.

I actually (probably foolishly) believe that the common problems that are known about are sorted now. Just not sure if there are any others lurking after 30,000, 40,000, etc. miles.

I do believe they both have a S6 engine,my choice would be a tusc but anything with a S6 engine is of the list for now

Have to admit that, at the moment, living with a S6 engined car is a bit like living with Joe Pesci in GoodFellas mode, you just don't know when the things gonna whack ya! (financially speaking!) So you just end up driving it like Miss Daisy as you don't want to upset it!
I most certainly could not afford a rebuild every year, or 12K miles, may as well buy an Audi RS4/6 engine and have that transplated, cheaper in the longrun!
Having said that, still love my car to bits

The moral of this story is "Dont go into ownership of a SP6 with your eyes shut" Yes some ( and it is a lottery ) cause problems. If you can only afford the price of the car dont go there. They are expensive to run and can be a money pit. If you can accept there may be engine probs, then measuring £ per performance, looks, individuality etc, the Tusc is still the most awseome car on the road . I sometimes think some people lose sight of the stature of vehicle they are driving .

True. I lost sight of it, erm, when it got wheeled into TVR Power's workshop for 8 weeks.

Seriously, though, good point.

LOL...in 2 months of ownership weve only seen ours for 3 weeks

its a good job TVR are an enthusiast orientated brand...they would have gone bust by now selling these cars to owners that wanted a perfect product for £35-60K of their dosh ...god help them if they try to get into the US....maybe they will do what Lotus has done..and buy in an engine thats passed all the endurance/emissions tests.....mmmmm....BMW 5L V10 500bhp - think that would fit? ...im sure it could be made to sound nice with some CCC cans and cat pipes

Hi JS I think your threads are great. The point I am trying to make is that there is an awful lot of people who sink their last pound into buying a Tusc, because of its pressence on the road, but without considering the running costs as well as the well documented associated probs. I am not defending them as they shouldnt happen. Sadly they do, and I for one allow for the possible before buying. I am now quite happily awaiting my 2nd Tusc S with absolutely no regrets or 2nd thoughts. I love em

I agree too - its the same with the Elise...now you can pick them up for £10K a lot of younger owners are buying them and thinking they are a cheap to run sportscar....then get a shock with the odd £500-£1K bill here and there etc...and TVRs are on another scale altogether. Personally Id sooner have a cheaper car that I can afford to drive as much as I like and not worry about it rather than stretch to owning say a £70K s/h Ferrari and dare only do 3-5K miles a year in it...whats the point of having a nice car if you cant use it ? ...We want to use our Tuscan every day...if it holds together we may stick 15-20K miles a year on it between us...but I dont have confidence that the product will allow that ..I dont car if its only worth £15K in 3 years time due to having high miles on it ...if Ive had 60K miles of motoring pleasure...thats what its for

just cant wait to get it back...getting withdrawal symptoms...it wouldnt be so bad all this rebuild stuff if they could turn it around in a week or 2....but 6 - 12 weeks is ridiculous.

<sorry for rant - just a little bit miffed>
